The Crew's backstop destroyed a pitch for a homer in the third inning, but at what cost?

MLB players get asked to sign autographs on to objects before and after every game. But it's not always fans of the opposing team and it's not often the type of object that Milwaukee Brewers catcher William Contreras was asked to sign on Friday, though there was a good reason for this one.

Let's rewind to the game itself. The Brewers just kicked off a series against the Boston Red Sox last night. It's the final game of a nine-game road trip and after losing the first two series of the trip to the Astros and Marlins, the Crew were looking to start this series strong and head back home on a high note.

The Brewers started the game a little unconventionally, deploying an "opener" in Jared Koenig before bringing in originally planned starter Bryse Wilson. Koenig was a little shaky, but ultimately the strategy worked and the Red Sox would be kept off the board to start the game.

Both teams remained scoreless heading into the top of the third when Brewers leadoff man Brice Turang, starting for the first time since Sunday, drove rookie Jackson Chourio home on a sacrifice fly for the first run of the game. With one out, Contreras then stepped to the plate.

It would take just two pitches for the surefire All-Star candidate to do what he does best: destroy baseballs. Contreras would hit an absolute missile off Boston starter Kutter Crawford, 111.8 MPH right over the Green Monster for a two-run homer and a 3-0 lead, destroying a Red Sox fan's snack in the process.

The game would continue on after that with Wilson and the Brewers never giving the Red Sox much of a chance to get back in the game and Milwaukee eventually extending their lead. But there was a question on the mind of the broadcast and some fans as well. What about the popcorn?!

Well, the Brewers decided to make a good will offering to the poor Red Sox fans who lost their gameday treat. While they were being interviewed on the Apple TV broadcast, former Milwaukee pitcher and current Brewers pre- and postgame analyst for Bally Sports Wisconsin Tim Dillard came over with some replacement popcorn, making everything right with the world.

A few innings later, the Brewers would seal up a 7-2 win, stretching their NL Central division lead to 2.5 games over the Cubs, who were rained out last night. But before the night could officially be over, Contreras would take some time to take pictures with the (un)lucky Red Sox fans and do one more thing as well: sign the ill-fated popcorn bucket.

It was great to see everyone make light of a humorous situation and for the Brewers to make two Red Sox fans' night by meeting an MLB player in person. As for the popcorn? Rest in peace (pieces?), you made a valiant sacrifice.
