Brewers: Here Is Your Milwaukee Brewers 2023 Opening Day Roster
Opening Day is finally here! After weeks of spring training games, the roster battles have been decided and the Milwaukee Brewers have their 26 man roster they will carry to begin the 2023 regular season.
There were several spots up for grabs this year, especially in the bullpen and the infield. While some players missed out on Opening Day roster spots, that doesn't mean they won't be contributing later in the season, potentially not even that much later.
Here are the 2023 Milwaukee Brewers on the Opening Day roster.
Catchers (2) - William Contreras, Victor Caratini
Infielders (7) - Rowdy Tellez, Luis Urias, Willy Adames, Mike Brosseau, Owen Miller, Brice Turang, Luke Voit
Outfielders (3) - Brian Anderson, Garrett Mitchell, Christian Yelich
Designated Hitter (1) - Jesse Winker
Starting Pitchers (5) - Corbin Burnes, Brandon Woodruff, Eric Lauer, Freddy Peralta, Wade Miley
Bullpen (8) - Devin Williams, Matt Bush, Peter Strzelecki, Hoby Milner, Gus Varland, Javy Guerra, Joel Payamps, Bryse Wilson
Injured List (5) - Tyrone Taylor, Aaron Ashby, Adrian Houser, Justin Wilson, Jason Alexander
The Brewers opted to go deep with infield options, but both Owen Miller and Brice Turang are capable of handling some outfield duties if necessary, as is Jesse Winker. Winker is an outfielder by trade but his defensive metrics are poor, which is why he'll be the primary DH option for the Brewers to start the year. While outfield prospects Sal Frelick and Joey Wiemer were competing for spots, the Brewers decided to send them down to Triple-A to begin the year.
Luke Voit opted out of his minors deal but decided to return on a big league contract.
The bullpen has some question marks but some good talent in there. All of the out of options relievers made the team on account of Adrian Houser's IL placement to begin the year. Gus Varland is a Rule 5 selection that earned a spot with an impressive spring. Varland, Guerra, and Payamps figure to comprise the middle relief group and Bryse Wilson will be the long reliever in Houser's absence
The Brewers notably placed Justin Wilson on the 15 day IL instead of the 60 day. He's out until July recovering from surgery, so he'll go there eventually, but the Brewers don't need another 40 man roster spot just yet so they'll hold off on that move until they do.
The bullpen will have just one left-hander, Hoby Milner. The rotation will have two in Lauer and Miley.
Brice Turang and Gus Varland are two rookies who will be making their MLB debuts on this Opening Day roster. The Brewers put out videos of Craig Counsell telling both players they made the team.
The 2023 regular season is finally upon us! We have the team, and now it's time to play.
