Brewers injury updates: Hoskins nearing return while Hall still on hold
Updates were also given on four other Brewers players on Tuesday afternoon.
To many Milwaukee Brewers fans, it feels like the injury news is always about players being placed on the injured list and never about them returning. Well on Tuesday, it started looking like that trend might finally be ready to reverse.
Injury updates were provided on multiple Brewers players currently on the IL, with a majority of the updates being on the positive side. Let's take a quick look at those updates and see which members of the Crew are getting closer to being back on the field (and which one might take longer).
Brewers first baseman Rhys Hoskins continues to progress and could even be under a week away from returning.
The original 2-4 week timeline for Brewers slugger Rhys Hoskins still looks to be accurate as Milwaukee Journal Sentinel writer Curt Hogg reported that the first baseman was running on the field prior to Tuesday's home matchup against the Cubs. That leaves the possibility open of a very big return date.
Per the same report, Brewers manager Pat Murphy stated that it's not out of the realm of possibility that Hoskins could return to the field early next week. That just so happens to be when Milwaukee will be on the road to take on the Phillies, the team that Hoskins had spent his entire career prior to landing with the Crew, making it a series he would hate to miss.
Brewers outfielder Garrett Mitchell also took the next step in his quest to return from injury.
Also seen before Tuesday's game was outfielder Garrett Mitchell playing catch with his own glove for the first time since landing on the injured list. This report came via Dom Cotroneo of Bally Sports Wisconsin.
Mitchell had just taken swings off a tee for the first time since being injured last Friday in Boston and reports were that it went well. There's no word yet on exactly when he will return, but early to mid June still seems to be a reality.
Brewers pitcher DL Hall is seeking a second interview on his tweaked left knee.
Today, Brewers pitcher DL Hall was able get imaging on the injured left knee that he tweaked during a rehab appearance at Triple-A Nashville. Though it's unknown what that test showed, Hall is now awaiting a second opinion on the knee per Hogg.
Second opinions haven't been Milwaukee's friend this year as one led to the revelation that Devin Williams would miss half the season while another revealed the fact that Wade Miley would be out for the year. Hopefully this one reveals some more positive news.
Meanwhile, Brewers pitchers Jakob Junis and JB Bukauskas are each throwing bullpen sessions on Friday.
On the brighter side, the Brewers bullpen are getting close to getting a couple key pieces back as Jakob Junis and JB Bukauskas are each scheduled to throw bullpens this Friday. Per Hogg, Junis believes he only needs a couple short outings to be ready to return to the roster.
Junis began the season in the rotation, but in an effort to get him back faster by not taking so long to stretch him out (and also because the rotation has been getting by lately), the plan seems to bring him back as a reliever. Bukauskas hasn't pitched in the majors yet this year, but was expected to be a big part of the rotation picture and will be able to do so again when he returns.
Finally, Brewers starter Brandon Woodruff was seen being active on Tuesday as well.
As much as we wish we could tell you that beloved Brewers veteran Brandon Woodruff is set to return soon like most of the rest of this group, he is still all but certain to miss the entire 2024 season. But that doesn't mean we can't get excited when he takes even small steps toward his eventual return.
All of these players still have hills to climb on their way back from the injured list. But in a few weeks, this roster could look a bit different than it does now, in a good way.
