Brewers minor league prospect receives major suspension for PEDs
Ever Urena was playing for the DSL Brewers
One of the prospects in the Milwaukee Brewers farm system has been suspended after testing positive for performance enhancing drugs.
Ever Urena, a 19 year old right handed pitcher, received a 56 game suspension after testing positive for Stanozolol, a banned substance. Urena was signed out of the Dominican Republic on July 12th this year and this was his first season in professional baseball.
Urena was assigned to the DSL Brewers 2 roster. He had appeared in six games this season with a hold and a save in 5.1 IP with three strikeouts and one walk. He did not allow a run or even a hit, holding a pristine 0.00 ERA.
Brewers prospect Ever Urena suspended for PEDs
Urena was not one of the top prospects in the Brewers 2024 international signing class and is not regarded as one of the top prospects in the system either. For an international free agent, signing at 19 is pretty late, and he didn't sign in January when most in the class do either, instead signing in July when the season was already ongoing.
Since the DSL season is already over, Urena will begin serving his suspension next season. The DSL plays 72 games in a season, so a 56 game suspension will knock Urena out for more than three-quarters of the 2025 season. The Brewers DSL teams played their last game on August 20th.
There have been 13 minor league players who have been suspended for PEDs this year with more than half of them being players assigned to the Dominican Summer League. Urena is the first Brewers minor leaguer to be suspended for a positive test this season.
Urena will have to hope he can still get another opportunity with the Brewers on the other side of this suspension. The 19 year old was able to get some good results before the positive test, but time will tell if the Brewers are going to be willing to give him another shot.
