Brewers pitcher's little brother included in division rival's trade deadline deal
A Crew member's sibling heads from the land of pierogies to the Mile High City.
There are less than 24 hours before the MLB trade deadline will pass. Plenty of moves have been made on the penultimate day of the deadline including the Milwaukee Brewers finally making a move for a starting pitcher.
But prior to making their latest trade deadline deal, the sibling of one of the Crew's players got traded to a new team as well. And on top of that, he got traded out of the division from one of Milwaukee's NL Central rivals.
On Monday, the Pittsburgh Pirates traded away pitching prospect Luis Peralta in a deadline deal with the Colorado Rockies as reported by Mark Feinsand of MLB.com. Peralta, as one might surmise, is the little brother of Brewers starting pitcher Freddy Peralta.
Luis was signed by the Pirates back in the summer of 2017. He would join their Dominican Summer League team the next summer and slowly work his way up the system. His numbers were mostly average until this season when the 23-year-old broke out in a big way.
The younger Peralta was nearly untouchable in his first taste of High-A baseball, giving up just two earned runs over 30 innings and holding hitters to just a .121 batting average. Like his older brother, he's racked up plenty of strikeouts, averaging a whopping 15 per nine innings.
Peralta has since moved to the Double-A level and has held his own there just fine as well. In 9.2 innings, he has given up another two earned runs and has struck out 14 batters compared to just three walks.
The Pirates traded Peralta away to acquire pitcher Jalen Beeks from the Rockies. The 31-year-old Beeks was a former 12 round pick of the Red Sox and has a 4.74 ERA in 45 relief appearances with Colorado this season.
The move is perhaps a little puzzling as the Pirates traded a pitching prospect away for a rental reliever with an ERA close to five. Yes, Pittsburgh is within striking distance of a Wild Card spot, but they haven't done much else besides this to make a playoff push.
The sad part is that we've been robbed of a Peralta vs Peralta pitching matchup between two NL Central rivals. One can only hope that it'll still happen in a future game against the Rockies.
