Brewers: Pitching Prospect Abner Uribe One Step Closer to MLB with Triple-A Promotion

Ever since he started popping up on the radar of some Milwaukee Brewers fans, flame-throwing pitching prospect Abner Uribe has been one of the more anticipated big league arrivals in recent years. Now, he's knocking loudly on that door.

On Monday, the Double-A Biloxi Shuckers, Uribe's home up until today, announced that the right-hander was being promoted to the Triple-A Nashville Sounds. There's a good chance he makes his debut in front of home fans as his new team hosts the Gwinnett Stripers this week.

The Brewers were so impressed with his potential that they added Uribe to the 40-man roster last offseason in order to protect him from baseball's Rule 5 draft. Now, there's a very good chance that he makes his MLB debut before the 2023 season is over.

Uribe was signed by the Brewers as an international free agent during the summer of 2018. He made a handful of appearances in the rookie leagues over the next couple years before getting his first taste of affiliated ball in 2021, where his immense talent was obvious but he showed that some work still needed to be done.

Already touching 100 mph with his blazing fastball, Uribe struck out 52 of the 150 batters he faced for Low-A Carolina. However, he also walked 25, uncorked 14 wild pitches, and had a 4.01 ERA by the time the season was done. After the season he participated in Arizona Fall League where he again struck out a bunch of batters (16 of 54) but also walked a bunch (17).

Still, it was off to Double-A in 2022, but not before taking part in spring training with the parent Brewers club. He made such an impression that manager Craig Counsell spoke about how Uribe could see himself in the majors sooner rather than later.

Sadly, Uribe would only pitch in two games before missing the rest of the season with a knee injury. He was back there to start 2023 though and had been looking great so far this year. In 15 games, Uribe had a 2.40 ERA with seven saves and had struck out 28 of 61 batters while only walking nine.

With such a nasty fastball-slider combo, Uribe has a great chance to excel at the Triple-A level as well. As long as that's the case, expect to see him in a Brewers uniform before you know it.
