Speculation about a Corbin Burnes trade this winter began early and likely won't come to an end until either Burnes gets traded, or spring training begins. A lot of teams are interested in acquiring the Brewers ace.
The departure of Brandon Woodruff this offseason would make a Corbin Burnes trade less likely on paper, but that won't stop teams from calling on Burnes and trying to make their best possible offer to acquire him.
According to MLB Network's Jon Morosi, there are four teams, all on the West Coast, that are "enamored" with Burnes to varying degrees. The four teams named were the Los Angeles Angels, the Los Angeles Dodgers, San Francisco Giants, and San Diego Padres.
The industry belief is that Burnes is going to be moved before spring training, per Morosi.
This report conflicts with other recent reporting that the Brewers were pulling back from the idea of trading Burnes and were more likely to keep him than trade him.
Teams being interested in Burnes shouldn't come as a surprise. The Angels have needed pitching for years and Burnes grew up an Angels fan. The Dodgers also have a need for pitching and Burnes fits the type of player they usually go after. The Giants are desperate for star power on their team and have money to throw around, so they could try to get Burnes and then extend him. The Padres are losing several starting pitchers this winter and need to re-stock their rotation.
Of these interested teams, the Dodgers would likely be able to put together the best possible return for Milwaukee in a potential Burnes trade. They're swimming in prospects and big league ready players that could replenish the Brewers roster and fill some needs. The Angels have a weak farm system and traded a bunch of it away trying to contend this year. Similarly, the Padres farm system is top heavy and they lack some movable depth. The Giants have a solid system and some players that could intrigue the Brewers.
This report doesn't indicate that anything has really changed in Burnes trade talks. It's no surprise to see any of these teams having interest in Burnes and it's no surprise that some industry personnel think he ends up getting moved. However other industry personnel believe he won't be moved according to other reports.
The Angels, Dodgers, Giants, and Padres can be enamored with Burnes all they want, but it'll take quite the return package to convince the Brewers to pull the trigger on a trade. Everything can change with one phone call this time of year.
