When it comes to outfielders, the Brewers are sitting pretty. They have an enviable surplus of major league quality outfielders, but only so many roster spots to give to them. Once Jackson Chourio's contract extension became official, the logical next move would be to trade from that outfield depth to fill other needs.

According to the latest rumors out of the Winter Meetings, that's exactly what the Brewers are doing. The New York Post's Jon Heyman reported that the Brewers are "fielding offers" on their plethora of outfielders.

This is no surprise. Christian Yelich is locked in until 2028, Jackson Chourio is now locked in until 2031 at least, and the Brewers have three top outfield prospects that recently graduated, plus three more outfielders on the roster.

The Brewers seem likely to trade at least one of their young outfielders to fill other needs on the roster this offseason.

Right now, the Brewers have eight outfielders on their 40 man roster. Here's how they stack up based on availability:

Untouchable: Christian Yelich, Jackson Chourio
Available - High Value: Joey Wiemer, Garrett Mitchell, Sal Frelick
Available - Low Value: Tyrone Taylor, Blake Perkins, Chris Roller

Yelich and Chourio aren't going anywhere, which makes one of the big three freshmen from this past season the high value, available potential trade pieces. The Brewers are going to field offers on all of them, but they may not be certain which one they want to deal or will end up dealing quite yet.

Technically, Tyrone Taylor, Blake Perkins, and Chris Roller would all be "available" as well. The Brewers won't make them untouchable if someone wants to trade for them. But whatever potential return they would get for one of those three outfielders would be significantly lower than what someone from the trio of Wiemer, Mitchell, and Frelick would bring.

Heyman didn't report specifics about what teams were involved or which specific outfielder was being talked about, but there's likely a wide variety of scenarios being talked about right now.

Teams needing outfield help this offseason include the Mets, Blue Jays, Guardians, Mariners, and Giants. These are merely speculative teams that could try to get involved and they have not been connected to these talks.

By the end of these Winter Meetings, the Brewers should have a good idea of how the rest of the league values their young outfielders and where they're likely to get the best return to fit their roster needs. While there's a chance a deal could always get done during these Winter Meetings, at this point it appears more likely a move will happen after the Meetings conclude.
