There's one thing we know for sure: the Milwaukee Brewers will be looking into several options to improve starting pitching at the 2024 MLB trade deadline. One of the first big rumors in that regard just hit the airwaves.

According to Russell Dorsey, national MLB insider for Yahoo Sports, the Brewers are among multiple teams interested in Los Angeles Angels starting pitcher Reid Detmers. Dorsey also lists the Dodgers, Diamondbacks, Guardians, and Astros as potential suitors.

Many may remember Detmers for the fact that he threw a no-hitter as a member of the Angels back in the 2022 season. The then 22-year-old gave up a walk and struck out two while throwing 108 pitches to earn the no-no in a 12-0 win over the Tampa Bay Rays.

That season was easily the best one of Detmers' young career. The Angels' former 10th overall pick in the 2020 draft would end up finishing the season 7-6 with career lows in both ERA at 3.77 and WHIP at 1.209.

Two years later, Detmers' numbers haven't been quite as strong. Through 12 starts, he is 3-6 with a 6.14 ERA and 1.476 WHIP, though he has one of the higher strikeout rates of his career at 25.3%. Unfortunately that's little consolation for the fact that he has been optioned down to Triple-A Salt Lake since June 2nd.

His numbers with the Bees haven't been that great either as he is 3-4 with a 6.49 ERA and a 1.442 WHIP in eight starts.

The Brewers' starting rotation has taken blow after blow this season and it's hard to imagine that a player with a 6.00+ ERA would magically solve that problem right away. But there are still reasons why a trade for Detmers would make sense.

For one, he does have a past track record of success in the major leagues, which is never a bad thing. And a 4.68 ERA and 4.0 bWAR over 70 games isn't horrible for a pitcher his age. Speaking of his age, the 25-year-old still has all three arbitration years ahead of him, which is plenty of time for the Brewers to work with him and get him back on track, as they do with many pitchers they bring in.

Whether it's Detmers or someone else, Los Angeles will almost certainly be selling someone. Their attempt to buy last year was unsuccessful and now with Shohei Ohtani on the Dodgers and Mike Trout on the injured list again, the 45-57 Angels are fourth in the AL West and have the third worst record in the American League.

Sometimes the trade deadline is about the short-term as much as it is the long-term and Detmers could help address both areas. Whether that's one of the few moves the Brewers should end up making is another question.
