The Trade Deadline is less than 5 hours away, and according to a new report the Brewers may be eyeing up bullpen reinforcements and have interest in left handed reliever Andrew Chafin from the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The 33-year old Chafin has a 4.19 ERA, 12.8 K/9 and 4.7 BB/9 in 34.1 innings with the Diamondbacks this season. Per Baseball Savant, Chafin he primarily throws his Sinker, Slider, and Four Seam with an occasional changeup sprinkled in.

As the Trade Deadline winds down, the Brewers are showing late interest in veteran reliever Andrew Chafin from the Diamondbacks.

Brewer fans might be familiar with Chafin from his stint in Chicago with the Cubs in 2020 and 2021. Chafin also spent time in Oakland and Detroit.

While his 4.19 ERA is not particulary impressive, Chafin has a much better 3.19 FIP a 3.38 SIERA, and a higher than average BABIP of .350 against him. The high BABIP could be helped if he were to play with the Brewers superior defense behind him. The walks are not great as well; however, he is striking out batters at a 32.7% clip, which is quite good.

There would be a fit for Chafin in the Brewers bullpen. Besides his look that is reminiscent of Gorman Thomas or an extra in The Nice Guys, Chafin would provide another left handed option for the Brewers and could supplement Hoby Milner in the absence of Justin Wilson.

Chafin signed a 1 year guaranteed contract this past offseason, but does have a $7.25 million club option for 2024 that comes with a $725k buyout if the Brewers were to decline the option.

Chafin would likely command a similar return to what the Brewers gave up for Mark Canha yesterday, a mid-teen level prospect, maybe someone who is Rule 5 eligible in the upcoming offseason. The Brewers would not be parting with serious prospects to acquire Chafin, but could get a solid bullpen arm who could be around for not only this season but next season as well.

The reliever market is still to see several names come off the board today, and Chafin could be the one the Brewers are eyeing up.
