The Milwaukee Brewers are still in first place in the NL Central, but they may need to watch out for the St. Louis Cardinals, who have won three straight, heading into Monday’s series opener.

The Cards have struggled out of the gate in 2023, but there is still plenty of time for them to turn things around.

Jack Flaherty (2-4, 6.18 ERA) gets the ball against Milwaukee’s Freddy Peralta (4-2, 3.32 ERA).

Here’s a look at the odds and my best bet for this matchup:

Once thought to be an ace, Flaherty has not found that same form in several seasons due to injury, and 2023 has been no different.

He ranks in the 11th percentile in expected ERA this season, giving up at least three runs in five straight starts. The biggest issue for Flaherty has been his command, walking 27 batters in just 39.1 innings of work.

That’s not going to cut it against Peralta, who has allowed just five runs over his last 18 innings. The Brewers are 4-3 in his starts, but 4-1 when he goes at least six innings.

Sweeping the Red Sox was a great series for the Cards, but I simply can't trust Flaherty against a Brewers team that is much better against righties than lefties this season.

Back Milwaukee to get the win on the road.
