Did the Milwaukee Brewers reveal their starting rotation plan for the stretch run?
The Milwaukee Brewers may have revealed their plan on Tuesday night
The Milwaukee Brewers bounced back in a big way for a much needed win over the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday night after dropping two of three to the Nationals in Washington over the weekend.
While the Brewers were busy hanging a 10 to nothing blowout on the playoff hopeful Braves, the Brewers might have revealed what their plans are for the near future of their starting rotation and how they plan to use their pitching staff going forward.
It was originally reported by Dominic Cotroneo that Pat Murphy and the Milwaukee Brewers were skipping Joe Ross' next scheduled start to avoid him starting against the Braves in back-to-back starts.
Last week Tuesday, Joe Ross got off to a really good start in the first two innings but gave up a four run third. If the Braves had followed the Brewers logic and skipped Bryce Elder to avoid him facing the Brewers back-to-back times, maybe they could have avoided such a lopsided defeat.
That said, Tuesday night would have been the 5th game since Joe Ross' last start after the Brewers and Braves finale last Wednesday and the three game series against the Nationals, however, as referenced in the Cotroneo tweet, Ross was not scheduled to start at all against the Braves. That didn't stop him from pitching against them however.
In Tuesday night's win for the Milwaukee Brewers, after a gem of a start from Colin Rea who went seven scoreless innings while striking out nine Braves, the first reliever in the game for Pat Murphy was Joe Ross.
The Brewers were off Monday and were just off last Thursday, so the bullpen should be in pretty decent shape as far as recent appearances, so why would they bring one of their recently returned rotation starters out of the bullpen?
Enter DL Hall. Last Friday, when answering a question on Twitter/X, Brewers beat writer Curt Hogg was asked what the update was on DL Hall, whether he going to stay in AAA or be brought back to the Brewers. Hogg answered by saying that Hall was going to make at least one more start for Nashville as the Brewers are trying to stretch his innings in case he is needed to start games for Milwaukee.
Fast forward to Tuesday night, the same night that Joe Ross was skipped in the starting rotation, just to make a relief appearance, DL Hall pitches a solid start for the Nashville Sounds. Hall threw four innings and gave up just one run on just two hits and two walks to go with three strikeouts in the Sounds 8-4 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates AAA affiliate Indianapolis Indians.
The Nashville Sounds tweet was quote tweeted by MLB.com Brewers writer Adam McCalvy who mentioned "Next stop could be the big leagues for DL Hall". Now this is hardly an official confirmation that DL Hall will take Joe Ross' place in the Milwaukee Brewers starting rotation, but there is plenty of smoke to indicate a fire.
The Brewers have two more games in Atlanta on Wednesday night and Thursday morning (yes, 11:20 AM first pitch) before returning home. Freddy Peralta and the recently acquired Frankie Montas are scheduled to start the other two games against the Braves. On Friday, Tobias Myers would be five days removed from his last start and then Saturday would be five days from DL Hall's most recent start. The timeline fits for the Milwaukee Brewers to have shown that their plan is to have Joe Ross move to the bullpen and DL Hall to come back to the big leagues as a starter.
