How do the Milwaukee Brewers rank in days lost to injury so far in 2024?
Plenty of Brewers have missed time due to injury, but how has that compared to the league?
If you wanted an underlying story for the 2024 Milwaukee Brewers season you'd have plenty to pick from: Christian Yelich's season-ending injury, first-time manager Pat Murphy storming out of the gate in his new role, or a young phenom battling for an NL Rookie of the Year award.
Sadly, another big storyline has been a sometimes overwhelming number of injuries.
Every team has to deal with injuries, it's just a part of the game. But the Brewers have taken blow after blow this year, constantly sending players to the injured list. It caused the team to entirely rework the starting rotation, consistently have to shuffle relievers on and off the roster, and as previously mentioned lose their top player who was looking like his former MVP self.
Many Brewers fans have felt as though their team has been particularly beset by injuries, but most fanbases probably think that no matter what. So what's the truth? Has Milwaukee been hit harder by injury this season or does it just feel that way?
How do the Milwaukee Brewers rank in days lost to injury in 2024?
Luckily, there's a way we can look up exactly this type of information. Spotrac, an oft-used site for information about player contracts across different sports also compiles information about injuries, including the amount of players who have been injured, the total days they've missed, and the total cash value of those days missed.
The big number here is total days missed due to injury and the Brewers have in fact been hit hard in this regard. Milwaukee players have missed a total of 1,462 days due to injury in 2024, a number that maybe isn't surprising when you consider players like Brandon Woodruff and Wade Miley who have missed the entire season (or at least most of it), but is still a whole heck of a lot.
But it isn't the most. Those days lost to injury rank sixth in MLB. The Dodgers have actually lost the most days due to injury, and by a wide margin at 1,811 games. They are followed by the Red Sox (1,546), Rangers (1,544), NL Central rival Pirates (1,505), and A's (1,503).
Looking at amount of players lost to injury, the Brewers have been hit hard in that department as well. 24 players have been lost to injury over the course of the season, which ties with the Reds for third most in the league behind both the Pirates and A's, who have each lost 25.
Hearing all of that perhaps makes it even more impressive that the Brewers have led the NL Central nearly wire to wire, have the biggest division lead in all of baseball at 10 games, and are just a couple games away from a by in the NL playoffs. Injuries happen, and Milwaukee has been as deft at navigating them as anybody.
