The 2024 MLB Draft continues on Day 2 of the three day event. Today includes rounds 3-10 and the Brewers will be making eight more selections after taking four players on night one. This article will continue to be updated as the picks roll in.

Here are some instant takeaways from each of the Brewers Day 2 selections:

Brewers 3rd round pick (93) - Jaron DeBerry, RHP, Dallas Baptist

  • Jaron DeBerry is a college senior, which means he'll likely sign for a major discount on the slot value. With three prep players on day one, slot savings will be needed. DeBerry was not ranked on MLB Pipeline's Top 250, but Baseball America had him ranked 459th.
  • This season for Dallas Baptist, DeBerry pitched to a 3.50 ERA in 90 IP with 89 strikeouts and 38 walks.
  • DeBerry is a former JuCo arm. The Brewers love junior college pitchers and DeBerry pitched at Grayson CC previously but transferred to Dallas Baptist two years ago.
  • DeBerry's fastball sits in the low-90s, tops out at 94, he has a downer curve and tight slider with high spin rates. The spin rates and pitch metrics here stand out for DeBerry and were what attracted the Brewers to him.
  • The Brewers are continuing to target pitching to start day two. They opened the Draft with a pair of hitters and then two high school pitchers with upside followed. Now it's three straight pitchers and the Brewers keep bringing in high spin rate arms.

Brewers 4th round pick (123) - Marco Dinges, C, Florida State

  • Dinges didn't catch much at Florida State this year. He caught a lot more back at Tallahassee CC. He played more corner outfield and first base this year, but the Brewers announced him as a catcher, meaning they intend to send him out behind the plate and try to develop his defensive skills.
  • This year for Florida State, Dinges hit .323/.417/.590 with 12 doubles, 15 homers, and a stellar 37 walks to 35 strikeouts ratio.
  • The Brewers are buying the bat here and hoping he can find a defensive home behind the plate. The power is solid, but likely not enough to stick at first base or a corner outfield spot, even though he's better there defensively.
  • Milwaukee is lacking in catching prospects behind Jeferson Quero, and catching was a position the Brewers needed to add depth in coming into this draft and they grab one here in the 4th round. The Brewers have historically done well in developing catchers defensively and hope to continue that work with Dinges.

Brewers 5th round pick (156) - John Holobetz, RHP, Old Dominion

  • A college righty, Holobetz stands at 6'3" and 190 pounds. He didn't post overwhelming numbers for Old Dominion this year. He pitched to a 4.31 ERA in 62.2 IP with 52 Ks and 20 BBs.
  • The Brewers are really digging deep here on Day 2 and selecting some players that are off the radar selections. Holobetz was not ranked by either MLB Pipeline or Baseball America. A college junior, Holobetz could sign for around slot or slightly below.
  • Holobetz pitched well in a limited stint in the Cape Cod League last summer. In 6.1 IP, he didn't allow a run, scattered four hits, and struck out 10 over two appearances.

Brewers 6th round pick (185) - Chandler Welch, RHP, Tulane

  • An undersized right-hander, Chandler Welch makes it three right-handers today and he's the 5th pitcher the Brewers have taken in this Draft so far.
  • When it comes to his arsenal, Welch's fastball stands out more for it's life than velocity, he doesn't throw hard. Typically he sits in the low 90s. Welch's best pitch is a cutter. He gets tons of swings and misses and chases.
  • This season for Tulane, Welch posted a 4.65 ERA in 89 IP with 88 strikeouts and 24 walks. His best start this year came against Rice, throwing 8 IP, allowing just one run and striking out five.
  • Welch's father is David Welch, who had an MLB career with the Cleveland Indians and Chicago White Sox.
  • The Brewers are continuing to grab off the radar players here on Day 2. Welch did not make Baseball America's top 500 rankings.

Brewers 7th round pick (215) - Mason Molina, LHP, Arkansas

  • The Brewers grab their first left handed pitcher of the Draft here with Mason Molina. MLB Pipeline had Molina ranked 225th on their big board. This is the sixth pitcher taken in nine selections so far.
  • Molina's fastball is up to 95 MPH with great carry and he pairs it with a changeup that will be his best secondary pitch. He also has a curveball and slider, but those pitches will need to be improved for them to be effective offerings and Molina to stick as a starting pitcher.
  • Molina pitched on the Brewers Area Code Games team as a high schooler back in 2020. The Brewers have selected at least one player in the Draft from every Area Code Games roster they've had since 2005.
  • Molina initially went to Texas Tech before transferring to Arkansas this season. He pitched to a 4.47 ERA in 15 outings over 58.1 IP with 81 strikeouts and 36 walks.

Brewers 8th round pick (245) - Sam Garcia, LHP, Oklahoma State

  • The Brewers go with back to back big school college lefties here late on Day 2. Of the Brewers 10 selections so far, seven have been pitchers.
  • Garcia had a great season for the Cowboys, pitching to a 3.64 ERA in 89 IP with 115 strikeouts and only 19 walks
  • The pitch mix here has a fastball sitting 90-93 MPH with a sweeping slider and a fading changeup. The swing and miss is clearly there with the strikeout totals and the command is strong with few walks. That, combined with the three pitch mix gives Garcia a solid chance to start at the next level.
  • According to his profile at Oklahoma State, his nickname is "Bubba"

Brewers 9th round pick (275) - Griffin Tobias, RHP, Lake Central (IN) HS

  • The Brewers are likely to have to spend over-slot here as they take a prep pitcher in the 9th round. Griffin Tobias is the first high school player the Brewers have taken on Day 2.
  • Tobias put up ridiculous numbers this season for Lake Central, pitching to a 0.95 ERA in 66.1 IP with 98 strikeouts. His fastball velo isn't overwhelming, sitting in the low 90s.
  • Tobias has a four pitch mix and has the ability to stick as a starting pitcher. He's committed to Indiana and that's going to be a tough program to sign him away from but by taking him on Day 2 here, the Brewers must feel confident they'll be able to do it.
  • Tobias won the Chicago Post-Tribune's Player of the Year award for the region this year and he led Lake Central to a state championship.

Brewers 10th round pick (305) - Ethan Dorchies, RHP, Cary-Grove (IL) HS

  • The Brewers round out Day 2 with a pair of prep pitchers, just like they rounded out Day 1.
  • Ethan Dorchies is big and projectable, standing at 6'5" and 215 pounds. He sits in the upper 80s, low 90s, but there is room for that velocity to improve as he develops.
  • Dorchies is very young for the class, still just 17 years old. He's committed to the University of Illinois-Chicago.
  • He gets extension down the mound and, like the other prep arms the Brewers have drafted, Dorchies has great feel to spin the ball.
  • Dorchies threw a complete game shutout with 12 Ks in the regional title game for Cary-Grove this year
