Key Brewers reliever set to begin what team hopes will be a quick rehab assignment
One of the best arms in the back of the Brewers bullpen could see a pretty minimal IL stint.
The Milwaukee Brewers have weathered injury after injury after injury to their pitching staff during the 2024 season. So of course one of them had to also happen to one of the team's most surprising and effective relievers this year.
Left-hander Bryan Hudson, who has a sub-2.00 ERA on the year for the Brewers in his first full season in the majors, had his dream season put on pause last week when he was placed on the injured list. The reason for the stint was an oblique strain.
Oblique injuries can be tricky for any player no matter the position. Sometimes they can linger and keep a player out for weeks. But the news for Hudson was good when he got his MRI as it revealed no major damage, leaving the team optimistic for a fast return.
The Brewers may get their wish as Bryan Hudson is already headed for what could be a fast rehab assignment.
Just 10 days after being placed on the injured list, it was revealed that Hudson was headed off to Triple-A Nashville prior to Tuesday's game against the Braves. That news came via MLB.com's Adam McCalvy on X/Twitter.
Hudson will reportedly work multiple innings for the Sounds in their game against the Indianapolis Indians on Wednesday. Perhaps that ends up being the only outing he needs as manager Pat Murphy stated, "We'd like to get him back as soon as possible," per McCalvy.
As previously mentioned, Hudson has been outstanding for the Brewers in 2024. Acquired via trade after the Dodgers designated him for assignment, the southpaw was close to untouchable early this season as he earned more and more high-leverage work for Murphy.
Even after stumbling a bit near the All-Star break, Hudson's numbers for the year are excellent. In 35 appearances, he has a 1.50 ERA and a 0.750 WHIP with a strikeout rate of 28.4%. Opposing batters are hitting a mere .145 on the season against him.
Hudson will be a welcome addition to the backend of a bullpen who just got star closer Devin Williams back as well. When fellow injured reliever Trevor Megill also returns to the team, it'll be a nightmare for any team attempting a comeback against the Brewers.
The Brewers have struggled just a bit their last few series and any little boost will be welcome. Of course, bigger boosts, like the return of a player like Hudson, are welcome too.
