Saturday's road game against the Miami Marlins ended up being the definition of bittersweet. While the Milwaukee Brewers ended up losing the game and having to wait at least another day to clinch the NL Central title, they got to see two of their players pass big career milestones.
The first player to pass a milestone on the day was first baseman Carlos Santana. He hit a booming three-run shot in the eighth inning to not only tie the game back up for the Brewers but also give himself home run number 300 for his career.
When Santana came to the Brewers at the trade deadline, he was nearing the career milestones of 1,000 RBIs and 300 homers. He already passed the first of those milestones nine days ago when he tallied his 1,000th career RBI in a 5-3 win over the Nationals.
Santana didn't just become the 158th player in MLB history to hit 300 home runs for his career. He also became just the 10th switch hitter to tally that many bombs over the course of their career.
After first baseman Carlos Santana hit his milestone, Brewers outfielder Christian Yelich passed one of his own.
One inning later, it was time for another big milestone to be toppled. In the seventh inning, Christian Yelich hit a simple grounder to first that seemed like an out until he was able to use his speed to beat the Marlins' Josh Bell to the bag.
That hit gave Yelich 1,500 for his 11-year career. Unfortunately, it would be the second to last hit of the game for the Brewers as the Marlins would score one more run in the eighth to break the tie and hand the Crew a loss.
The 148 hits that Yelich has this year are the most that he has had in a season since his near-MVP 2019 season. If he were to stay at his same hits per game pace for the final seven games of the season, it would give him the sixth most hits of any of his MLB seasons.
Next year, Yelich will look to pass another couple big milestones. He needs just seven more doubles to hit 300 for his career and another seven homers to get up to 200. Based on what happens this year, it's possible those milestones get passed right away in April of 2024.
