Should Brewers give a chance to this recently DFAed infielder?

The Brewers opted not to bring in any offensive help at the Trade Deadline a week ago. Now the only way to bring in outside additions is from the waiver wire. The son of a Hall of Famer just was put on waivers for a second time this year.

Cavan Biggio was designated for assignment by the Dodgers on Monday to make room for Freddie Freeman. Biggio was DFAed by the Toronto Blue Jays earlier this season. Should Milwaukee become his third team of the season?

The Brewers could use a potential upgrade at the utility infield spot, which Biggio can easily fill.

The Brewers should look to pick up Cavan Biggio

Before the Deadline passed, the Brewers were rumored to be in the market for a left handed bat. Biggio is a left handed hitter and although his numbers on the season aren't great, they would represent an improvement over Andruw Monasterio as the last man on the bench.

On the season, between Toronto and Los Angeles, Biggio is hitting just .197 with five home runs and a .622 OPS.

Meanwhile, Monasterio is hitting .195 with one home run and a .562 OPS.

There is some upside with the 29 year old Biggio and as a left handed stick, he could help present a different look for this Brewers infield and a slightly better chance of production. Monasterio could be optioned to Triple-A still while the Brewers give Biggio a chance to get some better results at the plate. If Biggio doesn't work out, they can simply DFA him like the two teams before and bring back Monasterio.

Biggio would not cost much at all to acquire, and could possibly even be had on a waiver claim with nothing going back to the Dodgers at all. If there are other teams interested in Biggio's services, it may cost Milwaukee a little bit in order to acquire him.

Biggio doesn't have a ton of power, but he did slug three homers in 30 games with the Dodgers. If he can provide even a little bit of pop like that as a left handed bat off the bench, that'd be a big boost for the Brewers.

Defensively, Biggio has limited experience at shortstop, which is not ideal for a utilityman. However, the Brewers have two other shortstops in Brice Turang and Joey Ortiz on the roster that could shift over from second or third base in the rare case Willy Adames isn't in the lineup and Biggio could back up at either of those positions easily.

It's worth a flier on the former Rookie of the Year candidate. The Brewers can take a chance on Biggio to see if they can improve that final spot on the bench.
