Surprising stat points to the Brewers as MLB's most consistent team in 2024
Don't look now (actually, you can look), but these Milwaukee Brewers are just continuing to roll. The club managed to split their most recent series against the NL West juggernaut Dodgers and entered this weekend's showdown with the Guardians 7-3 over their last 10 games (spoiler alert: they won again Friday night).
During Thursday's game against the Dodgers, the Brewers broadcast pointed out that their recent three-game skid almost led to them losing a very specific (but great) distinction. Another consecutive loss would've put their losing streak at four games ... for the first time all year.
Somehow, these Brewers are the only team in the major leagues without a losing streak of four or more games. This points to them being the very picture of consistency. It has felt all year long that this is a special team capable of making it deep into meaningful October baseball games, but to not have a single four-game losing streak through the middle of August is extremely impressive.
Brewers only team in MLB without a four-game losing streak
To get to this point, it's truly been a group effort from the Brewers, and they deserve to be commended for it.
Entering Friday's action, the Crew ranked ninth in the NL in home runs, but they've managed to piece together victories without hitting the longball. In fact, they're sitting fourth in the league in runs scored while also in second in both stolen bases and walk rate, which is just 0.1% behind the Dodgers. They're finding ways to get on base and score runs without hitting it over the fence, which has shades of the 2015 Royals (who won the World Series, by the way) all over it.
Jackson Chourio is quietly making a late run towards the NL Rookie of the Year Award, but he's facing an astounding amount of competition. Still, he's marching towards a 20/20 season, which would make him the youngest player in MLB history to do so.
William Contreras and Willy Adames have been solid as a rock as the club's primary backstop and shortstop, respectively. Each player is sporting a SLG above .445 and are both on pace to hit over 20 home runs (Adames is already there). Speaking of consistency, Adames is also looking to be the first Brewer to play all 162 games since Prince Fielder did it back in 2011.
It doesn't just stop at the offense, though. The Brewers also boast the NL's best staff ERA (3.72) and are atop the charts in strand rate. They don't strike out a ton of batters, and their walk rate is a bit higher than you'd like to see, but each pitcher on this staff is capable of shutting down a rally and leaving runners on base with the best of 'em.
From top to bottom, this Brewers team feels special. It's been a while since both the offense and the pitching staff have clicked all at once like they are this year. The fact that they're baseball's only team without a four-game losing streak truly does speak volumes to the consistency we're dealing with here.
