Not only did Sal Frelick produce the game-tying run in the Milwaukee Brewers' exciting win over the Boston Red Sox last night, but he also showed off his Gold Glove defense in right field.

In the fifth inning, with the game still tied 0-0, Red Sox rookie Marcelo Mayer doubled on a line drive to right field. The next batter, Boston's shortstop Trevor Story, sent a lazy fly ball a couple of steps to Frelick's left. The Brewers' right fielder camped under it, made the catch, and proceeded to deliver a one-hop missile right to Caleb Durbin at third base, who applied the tag and completed the double play. The play gave Frelick his 6th outfield assist of the young 2025 season, which leads the National League and is tied for the most in all of MLB. Additionally, Frelick's six assists this season already match his season-long total from a season ago.

The batter after Frelick's assist, old friend Abraham Toro, flew out to center field on a ball that likely would have scored Mayer from third base, had Frelick not mowed him down. In that regard, Yelich's grand slam might never have happened if it weren't for Frelick's defense.

What gets lost in the excitement of Yelich's first career walkoff home run and Frelick's impressive play is the excellent performance that the Brewers' pitching staff delivered last night. They held the Red Sox to just one run, in part thanks to Frelick's impressive double play.

Aaron Civale tossed his best start of 2025, going five innings and allowing just one earned run, which came on a wild pitch from Aaron Ashby, who inherited one of Civale's base runners. Outside of the wild pitch, Ashby looked very sharp in his outing. He struck out Jarren Duran looking on a nasty slider at the bottom of the zone and got Rafael Devers to ground out to second before allowing the run to score.

Jared Koenig had a nice bounce-back outing after allowing runs in each of his last two appearances. And the combination of Grant Anderson and Rob Zastryzny pitched a scoreless 9th and 10th innings, with Zastryzny retiring Duran and Devers while Story stood on third base in the top of the 10th.

Despite Yelich's late-game heroics, it really was a "team-win" for the Crew last night, and it wouldn't have happened without Sal Frelick's stellar defense out in right field.
