With Willy Adames officially gone, the storylines for the Milwaukee Brewers are starting to get narrowed down. Yesterday brought word that the Brewers currently find themselves among the more aggressive suitors for a Garrett Crochet trade which was a nice surprise. However, another potential departure is gaining steam down at the Winter Meetings in Devin Williams.
Speculation around a potential Williams trade is not new this offseason. The Brewers have maintained that they need to remain open to the possibility of moving Williams even though it does sound like they would prefer to keep him in a perfect world. However, the level of interest Milwaukee is currently receiving may be too much to ignore.
According to a report from The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon from the Winter Meetings, there are at least 10 teams that have been in touch with the Brewers about Williams, setting the stage for quite the bidding war in the coming days and weeks.
Devin Williams is making the Brewers very popular down at the Winter Meetings
While not all of the teams involved are known, some teams that have been specifically named include the Yankees, Dodgers, Royals, Tigers, and Angels. One can expect that any team that is looking for high leverage relief help is going to at least give Milwaukee a call and the list of teams that fit that profile is not small.
All of the interest in Williams shouldn't be all that surprising. Not only has Williams established himself as one of the best closers in baseball the last several years with a career 1.83 ERA across 241 appearances, but he is also only expected to get around $8 million in arbitration after the Brewers made the savvy move to decline his more expensive club option. Having just one year of team control along with Williams' 2024 injury issues will suppress his market a little bit, but not by much given the level of interest currently being shown.
Given the level of activity we have seen at the Winter Meetings so far, it wouldn't be all that shocking to see a Williams trade get done this week as teams appear to be very motivated to not get left behind by the market. As to where Williams could end up and just how much of a haul Milwaukee could end up with, that is the real question.
