The Brewers picked a strange time to promote Luis Lara to the MLB roster

An exciting move for Brewers fans, but one that brings questions about playing time.

Even before Luis Lara signed a seven-year contract extension back in early June, Milwaukee Brewers fans were calling for their club to promote the top outfield prospect to the major league level. After adding more power to a profile that already included elite defense, strong bat-to-ball skills, and lightning-quick speed on the basepaths, Lara had little left to prove in Triple-A, leading many to wonder why he wasn't yet up with the major league squad.

However, there was one major roadblock to Lara's promotion that was keeping him in the minor leagues: consistent, everyday opportunities were not yet available at the major league level. With a starting outfield group consisting of Jackson Chourio in left field, Garrett Mitchell in center, and Sal Frelick in right, while 2026 breakout Jake Bauers earned many opportunities in one of the corners, there wasn't a spot for Lara on the major league roster.

As such, Lara remained with the Triple-A Nashville Sounds for the entire first half of the 2026 campaign, despite maintaining an eye-popping slash line of .321/.432/.470. However, earlier today, seemingly out of nowhere, Milwaukee elected to promote Lara to the major league roster ahead of their doubleheader with the St. Louis Cardinals.

The move wasn't accompanied by one of the Brewers' starting outfielders landing on the injured list, suggesting that the playing time that wasn't there for Lara earlier in the year still isn't there despite him now being a member of the major league club. To make matters even stranger, all three of Mitchell, Chourio, and Frelick are in the midst of hot stretches at the plate, leaving fans to wonder whose playing time will decrease to open opportunities for Lara.

Brewers add top prospect Luis Lara to already crowded outfield group, leading to questions about playing time

Throughout the first half of the season, when fans and members of the media were calling for the Brewers to promote Lara to the big leagues, the team and manager Pat Murphy maintained that they wouldn't call up a top prospect just to have them sit on the bench. With Chourio, Mitchell, Frelick, and Bauers earning practically all of the playing time in the outfield, calling up Lara to fill Blake Perkins' role as the fifth outfielder, who made the occasional start, almost solely against southpaws, therefore made little sense. However, that's the exact move the Brewers made earlier today, sending Perkins down to Triple-A to make room for the 21-year-old Lara.

It would be one thing if Mitchell or Frelick were in the midst of a cold stretch at the plate, but both outfielders have been better than ever over the last three weeks. Take a look at their numbers since the middle of June.

Stats since June 15:

Garrett Mitchell: 65 PA, .328 AVG, .400 OBP, .621 SLG, 4 HR, 3 2B, 9 RBI, 178 wRC+

Sal Frelick: 51 PA, .304 AVG, .347 OBP, .435 SLG, 6 2B, 6 RBI, 3 K, 117 wRC+

Chourio has also been on a tear over the last three weeks, but the Brewers were never going to replace him with Lara in the starting lineup. With Mitchell and Frelick playing their best baseball of the season, replacing either with Lara in the starting nine makes little sense right now. Pair that with the fact that Bauers is coming off a month of June in which he posted a .947 OPS, and the decision makes even less sense.

One could make the argument that such a move is prudent before the All-Star Break if the Brewers were about to run into a string of southpaws and wanted to have the switch-hitting Lara in the lineup rather than left-handers Frelick and Mitchell, but the Cardinals are throwing two righties in the final two games of the series, before the Brewers face the Pittsburgh Pirates, who only have right-handers in their rotation.

It's incredibly exciting to have Lara up on the big-league squad, and it certainly gives the Brewers a stronger overall position player group, but the timing is confusing to say the least. Maybe the Brewers are going to try Sal Frelick at third base again. Maybe there's an injury the team has yet to reveal. However, assuming neither of those scenarios holds true, promoting Lara while Mitchell and Frelick are in the midst of their hottest offensive stretches of the 2026 season makes little sense. Hopefully, the Brewers can thread the needle of getting Lara consistent opportunities while not hurting the momentum that Mitchell and Frelick have built at the plate.
