Year after year, the national media tends to doubt the Milwaukee Brewers’ ability to contend. More often than not, others are projected to rack up more victories, another National League Central team is picked to win the division, and the Brewers are frequently pegged as a team likely to be on the outside looking in come postseason time.
Last year, Milwaukee once again exceeded the expectations that the offseason rankings placed on them. They finished with the best record in baseball, captured their third consecutive division title, and won a postseason series for the first time since 2018.
Despite their proven track record, and with the season only recently concluded, the national media is already forecasting a decline for Milwaukee. This was evident in MLB.com’s way-too-early power rankings, which saw the Brewers fall from first, where they finished the regular season, to ninth.
The national media is once again predicting a Milwaukee Brewers downfall that is yet to come
The familiar narrative of national outlets forecasting the Brewers’ decline has resurfaced once again. In MLB.com’s first offseason power rankings, several teams were slotted ahead of Milwaukee, including the New York Mets (fourth), who missed the playoffs entirely last year, and the Chicago Cubs (eighth), a team the Brewers eliminated in the postseason and that has since seen both Shota Imanaga and Kyle Tucker enter free agency.
This is a story that Brewers fans know all too well. Each offseason, national analysts look at Milwaukee’s roster, question the lack of star power, and predict that the team’s run of success is about to end. Yet year after year, the Brewers continue to defy expectations, finding ways to win through smart roster construction, strong pitching, and player development.
There’s little reason to believe Milwaukee’s success won’t continue. Even with some uncertainty surrounding Freddy Peralta’s future, Brandon Woodruff’s free agency, and the question of who will start at shortstop next season, the Brewers remain well-positioned. Their roster features a solid core of young major league talent complemented by a promising wave of prospects waiting in the wings. Together, that foundation should keep Milwaukee’s competitive window wide open, and once again silence the recurring predictions of an impending collapse.
