No team in the National League has scored more runs this season than the Milwaukee Brewers (711).
A big reason for that is Milwaukee’s lineup living up to their “next man up” mentality. Week-to-week and month-to-month, somebody new seems to always step up and carry the Brewers offensively. That’s how a team that’s 19th in baseball in home runs can be 2nd in baseball in runs scored.
During the dog days of the season, baseball fans might have been expected a power surge from Christian Yelich, Jackson Chourio, or recent trade acquisition Andrew Vaughn. But in the month of August, second baseman Brice Turang was not only the Brewers’ best hitter, he was the best player in the National League, as evidenced by the NL Player of the Month Award that he added to his rapidly growing trophy case.
Brice Turang's big August carries Brewers offense through grueling scheduling stretch
Turang had 11 multi-hit efforts in August alone. He raised his season OPS from .703 at the trade deadline to .798 today. In 28 games played in August, he was 37-for-108 at the dish and mashed an unbelievable 10 home runs. That’s good for a batting average of .343 and an OPS of 1.093.
From 2023-2024, Turang hit 13 home runs combined in 292 games and over 1,000 plate appearances. Then out of nowhere, he slugged 10 home runs in a single month, which was key to the Brewers’ success as the team won eight of the nine games that Turang homered in August.
It’s unrealistic to think that this is the kind of hitter Brice Turang is going to be for the rest of the 2025 season and beyond. But for an incredible defensive player that also wreaks havoc on the bases, if Turang is coming into his own offensively, he’ll quickly turn into one of the best second basemen in baseball.
Turang already outpaces the rest of the league when it comes to Wins Above Replacement at the second base position. With a 5.2 bWAR, Turang is tied with Nico Hoerner of the Cubs for the highest mark of any second baseman in the league. Interestingly enough, when it comes to FanGraphs WAR, Ketel Marte (4.6) and Jazz Chisholm (4.2) are the only second basemen in baseball with a higher fWAR than Turang this season (3.9). It’s not crazy to believe that Turang could be a consistent 5.0 fWAR for the Brewers in the future.
Just because the calendar has flipped to September, Turang isn't slowing down. The 25-year-old infielder picked up right where he left off on September 1, collecting two hits, including a solo shot to left center. Brewers fans can only hope he keeps hitting like this into the postseason. If so, it’s hard to see anybody stopping Milwaukee.
