Heading into the final week of spring training, the Milwaukee Brewers still have some loose ends to sort out when it comes to their Opening Day roster. The infield options seem to have been whittled down, but exactly who plays where is unsettled especially with Brice Turang's status uncertain. We generally know who is going to be in play to pitch, but exactly which players start the season with the big league team in Milwaukee does depend on how long the Brewers will have to wait for Brandon Woodruff and Tobias Myers.
Situations like these can lead to some roster decisions that make sense in the moment, but can seem pretty odd in hindsight. There is also times when a guy wins a job out of camp, and then unfortunately falls flat once the season starts. The Brewers' 2024 Opening Day roster was no exception here.
Here are the Brewers players you may have forgot were on the 2024 Opening Day roster
The goal here is to identify players from last season's Opening Day roster that fans may have forgotten made it, not guys that they wish they could forget. Yes, Rhys Hoskins struggled last season and Jake Bauers was bad, but they still played enough that fans will remember them for better or worse. However, there were a couple players from last year's squad that may have slipped your minds.
Jakob Junis
Junis is a classic example of the sort of player that could be forgotten. 2024 was the only season he played in Milwaukee and due to a couple of injuries, Junis only made 10 appearances for the Brewers last season where he ended up posting a quality 2.42 ERA. Even though he played well when he did play, the lack of actual time on the field makes Junis tough to associate with the Brewers at all.
Ultimately, Milwaukee decided to include Junis in the trade that brought in Frankie Montas. Junis would go on to give the Reds another 14 quality relief appearances last season. He would then decide to decline his option with Cincinnati and signed a deal with the Guardians back in February.
Thyago Vieira
At the start of the 2024 season, the Brewers had to grapple with their star closer Devin Williams dealing with a back injury that was going to keep him out for a then-indeterminant amount of time. That meant a bullpen arm that normally wouldn't have made the roster at all was going to get an opportunity and Vieira was arguably that guy.
Unfortunately, Vieira didn't exactly "seize the day" last season. After making 16 appearances for Milwaukee out of the bullpen with a 5.64 ERA during that span, the Brewers DFA'd Vieira and he would then make a short stop with the Orioles before eventually landing with the Diamondbacks where he pitched significantly. Sadly, it would be revealed during this offseason that Vieira's comeback would have to be put on pause as he required Tommy John surgery and will miss the entire 2025 season.
