Brewers Split Between Angels And Diamondbacks

Yesterday the Brewers played two ST games splitting their games between the Angels and the Diamondbacks, going 1-1 in a rare day/night doubleheader in Spring Training

The Brewers capped off a long day of baseball with an unfortunate loss to the Diamondbacks, losing 3-2 after Nick Ahmed hit a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the ninth. The doubleheader allowed for many minor league players to get playing time in the night game, even though some are no longer in Spring Training with the Brewers. Josh Hader impressed three scoreless innings, allowing only one hit with two walks while striking out five.  Skipper Craig Counsell commented “The first inning he probably had a little extra adrenaline but he got through it,” said manager Craig Counsell. “Then, he was really good the next two innings.”

Minor-Leaguer Austin Ross also tossed two scoreless innings and even acquired a base hit. Scooter Gennett also continued his hot hitting, with a double and a single both off of Arizona’s starter Patrick Corbin.

Meanwhile in the day game Yidel Riveria once again came through for the Brewers hitting his third ninth-inning home run of spring training. Riveria’s home run tied the Brewers up with the Angels and the catching prospect Jacob Nottingham hit a walk-off home run to give the Brewers the victory.

Matt Garza was given the nod to start on the mound and put out five innings of work, allowing eight hits, three runs, a walk and struck out two batters. Garza’s solid outing put his ERA at 3.95 and Garza commented on his spring so far saying “I’m out over my front side again. There was a lot of stuff last year I couldn’t do physically. And this year I’m getting back to the stuff I can do. It feels good again to get out in front of the ball and see your release instead of hoping you’re on time.
