Milwaukee Brewers fans are still hurting from their early 2024 playoff exit. The Brewers seemed to have a good matchup against the Mets in the first round and had a chance to advance with a win, but ultimately fell short. It was a series that also featured some bad blood between the two teams and those sorts of series losses hurt even more. However, few things about the postseason disappointment hurt more than when Brewers fans thought about Bob Uecker.
For many, 2024 represented the potential last chance for the 91 year-old Uecker to take part in a deep playoff run. Uecker is absolutely beloved in Milwaukee and has become synonymous with Brewers baseball during his decades long tenure broadcasting Brewers games thanks to his relationship with the community and unparalleled sense of humor. In a lot of ways, he has become an inexorable part of the organization and no one deserved a shot at glory more than him.
As a result, players and fans alike were heartbroken when Milwaukee was eliminated as a lot of people thought that Uecker's days in the broadcast booth may have come to an end with the loss. He had already cut down on the number of games he was calling and at 91, there is no guarantee he returns in any given season now. However, a recent interview with Uecker suggested that he isn't done just yet.
Brewers fans may get to see more of Bob Uecker after all
Again, there are no hard commitments here and nothing is certain, but Uecker was unequivocal when he was asked about his future and said, "I don't know what I would do, you know, with no more. If I think of no more baseball for me, I don't know what that would be like, you know? I got out of high school and I joined the Army. And I signed a baseball contact. That's been it, really!"
Assuming his health allows for it, that sure makes it sound like Uecker will come back for at least the 2025 season in some capacity. Again, Brewers fans would love to have him return and there is basically no chance the team would turn him down if he wants to run it back.
This is a potentially fantastic development that does take some of the sting out of the Brewers' playoff loss. As Christian Yelich said it best after being asked about the hardest part of Milwaukee's elimination, "For me, it was talking to Bob Uecker, that was kind of a tough one. All the other stuff, it is what it is. It's a tough way to end the season, but talking to Ueky one-on-one was tough." If Uecker is truly coming back, that takes some of the weight out of that lass.
The Brewers have obviously never won a World Series and their only appearance since Uecker joined the organization in 1971 came in 1982 when they lost to the Cardinals in seven games in brutal fashion. Maybe, just maybe the team can conjure one last run while Uecker is still on the call. At minimum, it sounds like Uecker is game to do his part.
