Brewers share history with World Series champions after Dodgers sweep

The Brewers' season sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers could be a sign of what's to come

The good times keep on rolling in Milwaukee, as the Brew Crew has now won an impressive 10 games in a row. They sit atop the NL Central, atop the National League, and just a half game back of the Detroit Tigers for the best record in all of baseball. But the Crew's 10 straight wins haven't been "cheapies" so to speak, with the team taking advantage of a stretch of games against MLB's bottom feeders. No, the Brewers have won six of those 10 games against the league's best, the defending champions, the $341 million payroll-owning Los Angeles Dodgers.

While the Brewers' current winning streak began two weeks ago with a 3-1 win in the series finale against the Miami Marlins, the team started really turning heads with their subsequent three-game sweep of the Dodgers. That series, which was played at American Family Field, included a 9-1 win highlighted by Andrew Vaughn's triumphant arrival to the team, a 12-strikeout masterclass from 2025 All-Star Jacob Misiorowski, and a walk-off win from Jackson Chourio in the series finale.

After a sweep of the Washington Nationals the following weekend, the Brewers entered the All-Star Break with a seven-game winning streak, and cautious concerns about what the four days off would do to their momentum. Those concerns were quickly alleviated.

Now playing in Los Angeles, the Brewers shut out the Dodgers on Friday night thanks to Quinn Priester's best start of the season, in which he collected 10 strikeouts and covered six scoreless innings, and an offensive performance to remember for Caleb Durbin, who homered, doubled, and drove in the Crew's only two runs. On Saturday night, the Brewers held on to an 8-7 win with every player in their lineup collecting at least one hit. They completed the sweep yesterday afternoon despite the Dodgers jumping out to an early 3-0 lead.

With their win in yesterday's matinee, the Brewers completed the season sweep of the Dodgers, as the two teams will not meet in the regular season for the rest of the year. In doing so, they joined some pretty elite company.

The two other teams to sweep a season series with the Dodgers of five games or more went on to win the next World Series

Alright, that headline requires a bit of an explanation, but first it requires credit. Sarah Langs, MLB's expert statistician who constantly posts incredible stats on social media, made the following post on X after the Brewers' win yesterday afternoon.

If you aren't following Sarah on X (@SlangsOnSports), you are missing out on some awesome content. Not only is that an incredibly well-researched stat, but when you stop and think about it, it's pretty unbelievable. Prior to yesterday, only two teams had swept a season series of five games or more against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Add to that exclusive list the 2025 Milwaukee Brewers. Sure, the schedule has changed around through the years, but it doesn't discount just how impressive the Brewers’ last two series against the Dodgers have been.

Now, for the explanation. There's a reason it says next World Series in the headline. Yes, the 2006 St. Louis Cardinals won the World Series, whatever. However, far more interesting is what happened in 1994 after the Atlanta Braves swept their season series with the Dodgers. 1994 was the year of the infamous players' strike. Spurred by disagreements over a proposed collective bargaining agreement which would have implemented a salary cap and new restrictive free agency rules, the strike led to the cancellation of the rest of the 1994 season on August 12.

At the time, the 1994 Braves were 2.5 games clear of the Houston Astros for the sole NL Wild Card spot and had appeared in two of the last three World Series. They very well could have been the World Series champions in '94, but since no postseason took place, no one will ever know. However, the following season, the Braves defeated the Cleveland Indians in the 1995 World Series, meaning they won the next World Series that took place after sweeping the season series against the Dodgers.

It's simply a fun anecdote, and by no means guarantees the Brewers a World Series title in 2025, but weird things like that happen all the time in MLB. Remember when the team to defeat the Brewers in the postseason made it to or won the World Series nine times in a row? Painfully, I remember too. But perhaps in a few years’ time, when a team sweeps the season series against the Dodgers once again, we'll look back and say each of the last three teams to complete the impressive feat went on to win the next World Series.
