Brewers' Double-A club suffers narrow defeat in championship after memorable 2026 season

The Biloxi Shuckers' 2026 season was one for the ages. The Milwaukee Brewers' Double-A affiliate compiled one of the most talented rosters in franchise history and made a run to a winner-takes-all Game 3 of the Southern League Championship Series (SLCS). Unfortunately, while the first Southern League title in franchise history would have felt fitting for manager Mike Guerrero's 2026 squad, the Shuckers' season ended in defeat on Wednesday night.

After sweeping the Pensacola Blue Wahoos, the Miami Marlins' Double-A squad, in the Southern League Divisional Series last week, the Shuckers advanced to the SLCS where a date with the Rocket City Trash Pandas, the Los Angeles Angels Double-A club, awaited them. A loss in Game 1 of the best-of-three SLCS meant the Shuckers faced a win-or-go-home scenario in Game 2 on Tuesday night.

Led by standout performances from starting pitcher Bishop Letson and infielders Andrew Fischer and Jesús Made, the Shuckers won Game 2 by a score of 7-0, forcing a decisive Game 3, which took place on Wednesday night.

The Shuckers turned to 2025 second-round pick J.D. Thompson to start Game 3. The 22-year-old southpaw allowed two earned runs in 3.2 innings before turning things over to the Shuckers' bullpen. Unfortunately, those two runs would have been enough to give the Trash Pandas the victory, as Biloxi's offense managed just one run in the contest. That lone run was the result of a balk in the seventh inning, which temporarily cut the deficit down to just one, but a home run from Angels' top prospect Arjun Nimmala in the bottom of the frame restored Rocket City's two-run lead. Though the Shuckers had a scoring threat in the top of the ninth, with runners on first and second and one out, Biloxi ultimately came up short in their comeback attempt, and Rocket City took home the title.

It certainly wasn't the outcome that the Shuckers were hoping for in the SLCS, but that shouldn't take away from the fact that 2026 was one of the most memorable seasons in franchise history.

The season began with Jesús Made, who one month into the campaign became the top-ranked prospect in all of baseball, being assigned to the Shuckers, where it was expected that he would be the team's everyday shortstop. Made, who was the youngest player in Double-A this year, certainly lived up to the hype, crushing a career-high 14 homers and collecting 91 RBI, which are the most in a single season in Shuckers' franchise history. MLB's top prospect slashed .271/.344/.430 with 37 stolen bases, a 10.2% walk rate, and an incredible 14.3% strikeout rate. Even as the competition has improved, Made has continued to show an elite combination of plate discipline, defensive and baserunning skills, and power potential.

Alongside Made in the Shuckers' starting infield at the beginning of the year was slugging first baseman Blake Burke, who the Brewers drafted with the 34th overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft. Burke put together the best season of his career in 2026, slashing .285/.367/.603 in 96 games with the Shuckers before being promoted to Triple-A. His 30 homers this year set a new Shuckers franchise record for the most in a single season, and earlier this week, Burke was named the MVP of the Southern League.

Halfway through the 2026 season, 2025 first-round pick Andrew Fischer joined the Shuckers amid his record-breaking home run binge. Fischer, who finished the season with 48 homers, crushed an incredible 28 homers in 72 games with the Shuckers en route to an incredible 1.026 OPS in Double-A. Fischer added two more longballs during Biloxi's postseason run and is expected to be named the Brewers' Minor League Player of the Year in the coming days.

Other highlights include outfielder Josh Adamczewski being named a Southern League All-Star, 2024 first-round pick Braylon Payne joining the team in mid-August, a quietly impressive season from catcher Matthew Wood, Dylan O'Rae's franchise record-breaking 63 stolen bases, and the team as a whole setting new franchise benchmarks for home runs and stolen bases in a single season.

Given the amount of talent on the Shuckers' 2026 roster and the many record-breaking performances they put together this year, it's apparent that the Brewers' future remains bright. It's only a matter of time before this talented group is leading the way for the big-league squad.
