The Milwaukee Brewers have announced their full coaching staff for the 2025 season, finally filling the last void left by the departure of first base coach Quintin Berry.
On Tuesday, the Brewers announced that former Major League outfielder Julio Borbón will serve as the Crew's first base coach in the 2025 season, replacing Berry. Berry left earlier this offseason to join Craig Counsell's staff on the Chicago Cubs as the third base coach.
Brewers finalize 2025 coaching staff, replace Quintin Berry
The Brewers had previously announced some changes on the hitting coach side, promoting Al Leboeuf to lead hitting coach with Connor Dawson and Eric Theisen as additional hitting coaches. Ozzie Timmons is not returning to his role as a hitting coach.
Former Brewers closer Jim Henderson was an assistant pitching coach last year and now adds the title of "strategy coach" as well. That was previously part of the title for Walker McKinven, who departed the organization this offseason as well to join the White Sox staff as the bench coach.
The rest of the coaching staff remains the same. That continuity is important for the Brewers as they look to make it a three-peat in the NL Central in 2025. Pat Murphy being at the helm for Milwaukee was crucial for the club to maintain continuity once Counsell departed for Chicago last year. Only losing one member of the staff in Berry to Counsell says a lot about how Murphy has been able to keep this group together.
Losing Berry and McKinven is a tough pill to swallow for Milwaukee, though, as that kind of brain drain from the coaching staff isn't easy to overcome. Still, they'll bring in a new face in Borbón, who has a similar background to Berry as a speedy former outfielder at the MLB level. They also promoted from within, as Henderson takes on a bigger role on this staff.
Berry was credited with the Brewers' aggressiveness and success on the basepaths in 2024 and Borbón is going to be charged with keeping that up next year, as speed is going to be a pillar of this roster once more.
It'll be a challenge for Milwaukee to maintain their top spot in the division in 2025, but now that the coaching staff is settled, the focus for the front office and coaching staff can entirely be on building and coaching up a winning roster next season.
