Brewers' first-round pick earns well-deserved promotion to Double-A amid dominant breakout season

At the midseason trade deadline, the Milwaukee Brewers parted ways with two talented outfield prospects, Alexander Frias and Josiah Ragsdale, to improve their 2026 roster for the final stretch. Those two prospects netted the Brewers Dustin May, who has already turned in two quality starts in his 10 days with Milwaukee, and left-hander JoJo Romero, who is expected to return from the IL in the coming weeks.

While giving up Frias and Ragsdale, both of whom were in the midst of head-turning seasons in the Brewers' farm system, certainly felt like a steep price to pay to the St. Louis Cardinals for two rental arms, Milwaukee's depth of talent in their minor league system certainly made the trade package easier to part ways with. In fact, while Frias and Ragsdale ranked 11th and 13th in the Brewers' farm system at the time of the trade, Milwaukee still has four outfield prospects who were comparably or more highly ranked than the pair: Luis Lara, Josh Adamczewski, Braylon Payne, and Jett Williams.

Among that remaining quartet, Lara is already impressing at the big-league level, Williams has spent plenty of time on MLB Pipeline's Top 100 prospects list, Adamczewski was just added to said Top 100 list during yesterday's update, and Payne is busy setting franchise home run records for the Brewers' High-A affiliate, the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers.

Just last week, Payne, who the Brewers drafted with the 17th overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft, crushed his 23rd homer of the season, which broke the T-Rats' franchise record for the most home runs in a single season. Enjoying a breakout campaign after an inconsistent inaugural season last year, Payne will now take his talents down to Biloxi, where he will join the Brewers' Double-A affiliate for the final stretch of the 2026 season.

Not only did Payne earn a promotion to Double-A this morning, but the former first-round pick is also celebrating his 20th birthday today. Selected as one of the youngest players in the 2024 draft class, Payne understandably took a little while to adjust to pro ball, with a pedestrian .736 OPS during the 2025 season to prove it.

However, this year, the breakout that the Brewers' front office was anticipating when they spent their first-round draft capital on Payne two years ago has arrived, and it's arrived in a major way. Payne has improved his OPS by nearly 200 points from where it ended up a season ago, with a .277/.369/.561 slash line that has caught the attention of prospect evaluators. His 23 homers and 15 doubles, paired with 22 stolen bases in 77 games, evidence the type of power-speed combination that has become coveted in today's game.

Payne certainly still has some developing to do, particularly when it comes to his strikeout rate, which decreased slightly from 30.1% during the 2025 season to 29.4% this year. That slight decrease came with a more significant decrease to his walk rate, which went from 15.2% to 11.8% this season, which is still above league average.

Though the strikeout numbers need to be curtailed slightly, Payne's combination of eye-popping exit velocities, impressive athleticism, and strong defensive skills make him one of the most exciting prospects in the Brewers' farm system. He joins a Biloxi Shuckers team that has already qualified for the 2026 postseason by way of their First Half title, and needs a boost to their offense after losing Blake Burke to a promotion to Triple-A earlier this week.
