This top prospect has certainly caught Pat Murphy's attention

Spring Training offers a unique opportunity for MLB's top prospects to play alongside big leaguers with whom they may not play or face in the majors for several years to come. Rosters in Spring Training are filled with non-roster invitees and top prospects who earned a chance to prove themselves against big league competition.

The time is especially exciting for teams like the Milwaukee Brewers, who, in addition to being a perennial playoff contender at the big-league level, boast one of the best farm systems in all of baseball. Playing alongside Milwaukee's stars like Christian Yelich this spring are top prospects like Jesús Made and Cooper Pratt -- all three of whom are in today's lineup against the Chicago Cubs.

Another Brewers prospect taking advantage of the opportunity to prove himself against major league competition, who also happens to be in this afternoon's lineup, is outfielder Luis Lara. Checking at No. 12 on MLB Pipeline's updated list of the Brewers' top prospects, the 21-year-old Lara has been an exciting piece of Milwaukee's farm system for the last four years. The Brewers have pushed Lara at each stage of his minor league career, and, for the most part, the talented young outfielder has responded.

The latest challenge involved giving Lara an invitation to big-league camp this spring, and it's safe to say the toolsy outfielder has taken advantage of the opportunity.

Brewers' No. 12-ranked prospect Luis Lara is off to strong start in big league Spring Training

Lara spent all of 2025 in Double-A with the Biloxi Shuckers, and though things started off slow for the Venezuelan outfielder, he turned it around in a major way by the end of the season. While continuing to play exceptional defense in center field -- where he won a minor league Gold Glove last year -- and frequently impacting the game on the base paths, Lara posted a .921 OPS in September, leaving him with a respectable season-long mark of .712.

Playing against established big leaguers this spring, Lara has appeared in seven games, collected 19 at-bats, and is sporting a slash line of .316/.409/.421 with two doubles. Additionally, Lara has received high praise from manager Pat Murphy and new first-base coach Spencer Allen, who is also the Brewers' outfield defense coach this year.

Heading into Spring Training, it seemed unlikely that Lara would impact the big-league roster in 2026. The Brewers, with options like Jackson Chourio, Sal Frelick, Garrett Mitchell, Blake Perkins, Akil Baddoo, and Brandon Lockridge, appeared set in the outfield, but the top prospect might be forcing his way into the conversation. If Milwaukee has to dip farther into their outfield depth, as they did last year, don't be surprised if Lara makes his MLB debut before the end of the 2026 season -- he certainly has Murphy's attention.
