Bad things often come in sets of threes. At least that is the old saying. For the Brewers, it has been a compounding situation of awful news, rolling from one disaster to another to start the season. Before the regular season even started, the team knew it would be dealing with devastating loss of longtime play-by-play man Bob Uecker. Then, it was a number of injuries from the start of spring training.

Brewers fans likely had some idea that Brandon Woodruff would be on the shelf to start the season as he works his way back from the shoulder injury that has kept him out of action since late 2023. Then it was DL Hall with an oblique injury to start camp. Then it was Aaron Ashby. Then Tobias Myers. Not to mention, Jose Quintana having to miss at least one start while building up to regular season form didn't help.

As the Brewers started the regular season with an already thin starting pitching staff, the team got hammered by the New York Yankees and their brand new bats. Of course, Aaron Judge wasn't using one, and he absolutely mashed the Brewers all weekend. On Sunday, it was Aaron Civale's turn in the rotation and things went from bad to worse.

Brewers place starter Aaron Civale on injured list

Civale's first start of the 2025 season was short-lived, as the veteran righty lasted just three innings, giving up five earned runs on four hits and a walk. He recorded just two strikeouts. Through those three innings, Civale tossed 68 pitches and had to come out of the game due to a hamstring injury. The injury, initially thought to be cramping, is serious enough to warrant a stint to the injured list, as first reported by Adam McCalvy.

With an already thin starting pitching staff that by no means did the bullpen any favors by getting chased in two of the final three games in New York, manager Pat Murphy is turning to Elvin Rodriguez in the home opener. The Brewers have called up Grant Anderson as the corresponding move to take Civale's 26-man roster spot. Thank goodness for Jake Bauers, who logged multiple innings in relief this weekend to help preserve what was left of the Brewers' pitching staff.

Anderson previously spent time with the Texas Rangers, appearing in 49 total MLB games over the last two seasons, logged a 6.35 ERA across 62 1/3 innings with 59 strikeouts. Milwaukee acquired him this offseason, trading prospect Mason Molina back to Texas, and we're about to see how he can help the big league roster.
