Brewers’ Jacob Misiorowski chasing rare franchise history in addition to Cy Young pursuit

Just one regular-season series against their division rivals, the St. Louis Cardinals, remains in what has been the most successful regular season in Milwaukee Brewers history. A team that many experts picked to finish with 80-85 wins has already reached the 100-win mark with three games left to play in the regular season. With a first-round bye, the top seed in the National League, and home-field advantage throughout the postseason, the Brewers have set themselves up for success for in the playoffs just as they did a season ago.

However, while the 2025 and 2026 Brewers both achieved the best regular season record in MLB, there's a key difference between the two teams that should have fans feeling more confident in this year's club: The 2026 squad will be led by the best pitcher in baseball, Jacob Misiorowski. Yes, the 2025 team had an ace in Freddy Peralta, who put together the best season of his career last year, but there's no denying that Misiorowski is in a different tier.

Thanks to a sophomore season breakout, the 24-year-old flame-throwing Misiorowski is the clear front-runner for the 2026 NL Cy Young Award. Just one year ago, when the Brewers were deciding whether or not to include Misiorowski on their postseason roster due to his late-season command issues and concerning inconsistency, the thought of Miz running away with the Cy Young in 2026 seemed far-fetched. The dominant right-hander, however, has reached his ceiling far quicker than anyone expected him to, and, as a result, is just weeks away from adding a Cy Young Award to a resume that already includes two All-Star Game appearances.

In pursuit of the National League's top pitcher honor, Misiorowski is unsurprisingly on the verge of etching his name in the franchise record books as well. One impressive franchise record looks all but certain after Miz's memorable 2026 campaign.

Jacob Misiorowski on the verge of setting a new single-season franchise record for the lowest ERA by a starting pitcher

Misiorowski is scheduled to make one more start before the end of the season in Sunday afternoon's season finale against the St. Louis Cardinals. While Miz's most recent start, which came against the Baltimore Orioles, lasted just three innings by design, it's possible the Brewers let their ace go a little deeper on Sunday, as he prepares for his expected start in Game 1 of the NLDS on the following Saturday.

His preparation for the postseason is undoubtedly the most important aspect for Miz in his final start of the regular season, but as the flame-thrower's attention remains locked in on the playoffs, Brewers fans may witness some incredible franchise history. Misiorowski currently sports an otherworldly 1.86 ERA, which is best in baseball this year -- New York Yankee's right-hander Cam Schlittler is in second with a 1.96. However, it's not just the best ERA in baseball that Miz is vying for, which would make him the second Brewer to win an ERA title (Corbin Burnes, 2021); Misiorowski also has a good chance to post the lowest season-long ERA by a qualified starter in franchise history.

The current leader for the lowest single-season ERA in franchise history is Mike Caldwell, whose 2.36 ERA during his incredible 1978 season barely tops the 2.43 mark Burnes posted in 2021. Assuming Miz covers five innings on Sunday, the Brewers' ace would have to allow 11 earned runs to fall behind Caldwell's franchise record.

To make matters even more impressive, given the command troubles that plagued Misiorowski a season ago, the flame-thrower has a chance to set a new franchise record for the lowest WHIP (walks + hits per inning pitched) in a single season. Miz's 2026 WHIP with one start to go is 0.803, and the lowest to this point in franchise history is the 0.940 WHIP Burnes posted in 2021. Pair that with the fact that Misiorowski looks all but certain to set a new franchise mark for strikeouts per nine innings pitched, and it becomes even clearer just how dominant Miz's 2026 campaign truly has been.

For Misiorowski, the 2026 season has been the result of his growth as a pitcher. His one-of-a-kind velocity is certainly the driving factor that catches everyone's attention, but his improved secondary offerings and far better command are why hitters just haven’t been able to come up with any answers. With a chance to make rare baseball and Brewers history, Misiorowski will have one final opportunity to put the cherry on top of what has been a remarkable season for both himself and the Brewers.
