The Milwaukee Brewers ran roughshod through baseball in May, with an MLB-best 19-7 record to prove it. However, just because the calendar has since flipped to June, doesn't mean the Brewers are slowing down. Milwaukee are 6-2 since the start of June, and during the stretch, their offense has averaged 9.5 runs per game.
After a weekend sweep of the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field, the Brewers won a wild game in Las Vegas on Monday night, which finished on Tuesday morning for Wisconsin natives watching from home. Milwaukee trailed by as many as four runs at a few different points in the contest, but in the hitters' paradise of Las Vegas Ballpark, the Brew Crew was never out of it, and ended up winning the 12-inning game by a score of 15-14. More than half of the Brewers' 15 runs came in the eighth inning or later.
During Monday night's Brewers.TV broadcast of the series opener in Las Vegas, a stat was mentioned that seems like it came out of a video game. Viewers were informed that during the month of June, the Brewers have scored more runs in the eighth inning or later than 19 teams have scored throughout the entire month.
In June, the Brewers have scored more runs in the 8th inning or later than 19 teams have scored during the entire month
Let that sink in for a moment. The Brewers have played two extra-inning games since the start of June -- one that lasted 10 innings in Colorado and last night's 12-inning game in Las Vegas. Additionally, the Brewers didn't bat in the ninth inning of their two home wins over the San Francisco Giants at the beginning of the month. That means since the start of the month, the Brewers have had 18 innings that have qualified as the eighth inning or later, and in those 18 innings, they've plated 34 runs. 19 teams or nearly two-thirds of the league haven't yet scored 34 runs in June and the Brewers have done so in roughly 24% of the innings they've played.
Unsurprisingly, the 76 runs that the Brewers have scored in the month of June, during which they've only had 74 innings on offense, are by far the most in baseball during the month. The Giants, with whom the Brewers split a four-game series last week, have the second most runs in the month with 43.
Obviously, being healthy has helped Milwaukee's offense immensely. Andrew Vaughn, Jackson Chourio, and Christian Yelich have been huge for the Brewers since returning from their respective injuries in May. The team is also getting a career year from Jake Bauers, one that may land him an All-Star nomination, and continues to see consistent production from Brice Turang and William Contreras.
Sure, the Brewers have played each of their last four games in two of the most hitter-friendly environments in all of baseball -- Coors Field and Las Vegas Ballpark -- but that doesn't change the fact that Milwaukee's offense has been especially clutch throughout the month of June. Regardless of how dire the situation looks at any point in the game, the Brewers' offense just never gives up, and that relentless mentality has sure been on display in the month of June.
