Brewers Magic Number update after series split with rival Cubs

The Milwaukee Brewers lost a pitching duel in the finale of their four-game series against the Chicago Cubs on Thursday night. Gausman allowed just one earned run while striking out nine, while the Brewers' rookie right-hander surrendered two earned runs, which both came on a third-inning homer from NL MVP frontrunner Pete Crow-Armstrong. The bullpens held things in check for both sides, and the Cubs took home a 2-1 victory.

The Brewers' Magic Number to clinch a playoff spot currently relies on the record of the San Diego Padres, who are the first team outside of the Wild Card race in the National League as of September 4. The Brewers have 13 fewer losses than the Padres, but after losing the season series, don't hold the tiebreaker over San Diego, meaning Milwaukee, in theory, would have to finish 1.0 game ahead of the Padres in order to beat them out for a spot in the postseason. That's why the Brewers' playoff clinching Magic Number is nine rather than eight.

Had the Arizona Diamondbacks lost last night, and the Brewers won, by virtue of the tiebreaker Milwaukee holds over the D-Backs, their playoff clinching Magic Number would have decreased to six, which is why it was being reported that Milwaukee could clinch as early as Sunday. However, now that possibility is no more, and the Brewers may instead clinch during their upcoming two-series homestand, which begins on Labor Day.

The Brewers' Magic Number to clinch the NL Central also could have decreased by three with a win over the Cubs yesterday, due to the fact that Milwaukee would have secured the season series and therefore the tiebreaker by winning last night. Without technically possessing the tiebreaker over the Cubs, the Brewers still may need to finish 1.0 game ahead of their rivals, which is why their division-clinching number is 14 rather than 13.

When it comes to securing a first-round bye, Brewers fans are looking to the Los Angeles Dodgers and Atlanta Braves' records. Both teams have three more losses than the Brewers, but because Milwaukee holds the tiebreaker over the Dodgers, their Magic Number to clinch a better seed than Los Angeles, and therefore a first-round bye, is 18. The Brewers don't yet hold the tiebreaker over the Braves, making their Magic Number to clinch a better seed than Atlanta, and therefore the No. 1 seed in the NL,19.
