Milwaukee Brewers fans have been desperate for the team to add talent to this promising Brewers squad all offseason long. The NL Central seems ripe for the picking and Milwaukee fans had been forced to watch Willy Adames and Devin Williams leave town with little in the way of reinforcements to compensate for the losses.

That changed for the better when the Brewers came to terms with Jose Quintana. While Quintana's best days are behind him to be sure, he is a pretty solid rotation arm especially for the price and should be able to eat valuable innings at the back of Milwaukee's rotation.

Quintana's $4.25 million deal became official on Wednesday which was great news, but the word that the Brewers were placing DL Hall on the 60-day IL to make room for him is decidedly less great especially for a Brewers team already dealing with some pitching depth issues.

Jose Quintana's deal helps, but the Brewers truly have a pitching depth problem with DL Hall officially out

Given that Hall was expected to compete for a spot on the Brewers' big league pitching staff in 2025, it was already rough news to learn of his lat injury in mid-February. Most of the updates we had received on Hall is that the injury would keep him out for at least a few weeks. Clearly the Brewers have had more information come in that made them think he will be out for a lot longer than that and now it will be May 26 at the earliest before we see Hall on the mound at all.

The timing of Quintana's deal is fortuitous to be sure, but most of the benefits early in the season are also already gone. Instead of deepening Milwaukee's rotation heading into the season, Quintana is going to be trying to cover innings with both Hall as well as potentially Aaron Ashby on the shelf. Not exactly what you want to see in spring training, but these are the cards the Brewers have been dealt.

This latest injury news certainly opens some doors a little bit wider for the guys the Brewers brought into camp this year. If Milwaukee is feeling brave, they now probably have to give top pitching prospect Jacob Misiorowski and even longer look as a starter. Another option could be Elvin Rodriguez who both can be optioned to the minor leagues to help with the roster shuffling and who the team brought as a bit of a safety net option.
