Brewers owner Mark Attanasio may be out as owner soon, but not for reason you think

While the Milwaukee Brewers have found a way to succeed during owner Mark Attanasio's tenure as owner, it hasn't come without some headaches. Attanasio has come under fire especially in recent years for failing to authorize increased spending on the team's roster and the subsequent failure of the organization in the postseason with just two playoff series wins since he bought the team.

It isn't fair to place everything on Attanasio's wallet or lack thereof. The Brewers have had opportunities to make playoff runs that the team themselves squandered and Milwaukee IS among the smallest markets in MLB. There are also owners that are significantly and objectively worse than Attanasio (sorry Pirates, Rockies, Rays, and Athletics fans among others) despite the calls from many Brewers fans for him to sell.

However, there is a real chance that Attanasio could be out as Brewers owner in the coming years, but not for the reasons that one would initially think. According to a report from USA Today's Bob Nightengale, there is currently a push from other MLB owners that when Rob Manfred retires after the 2029 season, Attanasio should replace him as commissioner.

Brewers owner Mark Attanasio could follow Bud Selig's path to becoming MLB commissioner after 2029 season

There is a lot to think about here and it is incredibly early to start thinking too much about who Manfred's successor as commissioner could be. However, Nightengale isn't just spitballing here. It is clear that he has heard specific rumblings about Attanasio as commissioner and this is not the first time that Attanasio has been floated as a candidate for MLB's top job.

It is also understandable that Attanasio would get support from his fellow owners as well. While MLBPA would almost certainly hate him as a candidate due to his stance on player salaries, Attanasio would likely be a strong voice in representing the interests of small market clubs as well as those that want to keep spending in check.

For Brewers fans, this wouldn't be the first time that their owner has become commissioner, although the circumstances were wildly different. Bud Selig became acting commissioner in 1992 because he led the effort to oust Fay Vincent in the aftermath of the MLB ownership collusion scandal in the mid to late 1980's. He eventually got rid of the "acting" part of his title and remained in the position until 2015.

As for what this means for the future of the Brewers is pretty unclear. Attanasio would have to relinquish his ownership stake to take the job and there is no telling if he is really willing to do that or who would take over if he did so. There are also other top candidates for the job including Theo Epstein, Casey Wasserman, and Dan Halem that will have their own supporters and there are going to be more names that emerge in the coming years. Whatever happens, things could get very interesting very soon for baseball in Milwaukee.
