The entire baseball world and especially Milwaukee Brewers country is still reeling from the news that the beloved Bob Uecker passed away. Tributes to Uecker are rolling in and that is going to be the case (and rightfully so) for a while. However, the offseason continues to march on whether we like it or not and one of the Brewers' nemeses is in the news again.

Anyone that watched the Brewers' playoff series against the Mets is fully aware of how Jesse Winker conducted himself. He was picking fights with Willy Adames during games, blasting the Brewers and the city of Milwaukee left and right, and has only doubled-down since then. It was at best a weird way for Winker to go about things given that he was so terrible with the Brewers and only has himself to blame for that, but here we are.

Well, the Mets seem to disagree with that general assessment of Winker. Not only did they seem to value Winker's contributions last year, but they also just re-signed him to one year deal.

Former Brewers turned organization villain Jesse Winker has a new deal with the Mets

In an ideal world, Winker would be forced to have to sign with one of the teams in baseball purgatory like the White Sox, Rockies, or Marlins to prove that he knows how to act in public. However, it is the Mets money and if they want to spin the wheel of destiny an pay to hope that Winker can replicate what he did in 2024 and ignore his dud seasons and questionable behavior, they are welcome to do that.

However, the story is a bit more complex than that. According to reports, one of the reasons why the Mets decided to bring Winker back is because it is looking likely they won't bring Pete Alonso back and the Winker signing is a part of their pivot away.

The Brewers can't be upset at this development. Since signing Juan Soto which was admittedly a very big deal, the Mets have done precious little to follow up the move and it is honestly debatable if they are better now than they were last season given their departures especially if Alonso is truly leaving. While that is little consolation to Milwaukee right now, it does help take the sting out of that postseason loss a bit.
