Brewers' reliever to finally serve one-game suspension after lengthy appeal process

The timing of the suspension really couldn't have been much better.

In addition to his lethal sinker-slider combination, Milwaukee Brewers' flame-throwing reliever Abner Uribe has come to be known for his unique string of celebrations that follow his scoreless innings. At various points, Uribe's celebratory emotes have included him holstering a finger gun in his back pocket, shooting an arrow into the sky, and rolling dice on the infield grass. Those gestures are almost always accompanied by Uribe slapping his chest twice and giving a scooping fist pump that he holds in the air for a second or two.

However, back on May 26, Uribe added a new gesture to his repertoire. After tossing a scoreless inning against the St. Louis Cardinals in a game that the Brewers were leading by a score of 6-0, Uribe turned to the opposing dugout and performed what was described as a "triple crotch chop." Fans of WWE might recognize the celebration as the D-Generation X Chop. Regardless of Uribe's inspiration, the move caught the attention of Major League Baseball and eventually earned the Brewers' right-hander a one-game suspension.

Following the game back in late May, Uribe, after apologizing to his teammates, his coaches, and the Brewers' organization, claimed that Cardinals' manager Oli Marmol was signaling for his pitchers to hit several players in Milwaukee's lineup because he believed the Brewers were relaying signs from their dugout. The tensions reportedly led to a heated altercation during batting practice prior to the game on May 26. Marmol denied the accusations, claiming he was simply saying someone was going to get hurt if the Brewers didn't stop relaying signs.

Uribe and the Brewers quickly appealed the one-game suspension, allowing Milwaukee's shut-down reliever to keep pitching while MLB decided whether or not their punishment would be upheld. However, just moments ago, the Brewers revealed that Uribe will officially serve his one-game suspension tonight during Milwaukee's series finale against the Cincinnati Reds, which is actually great timing.

Abner Uribe's one-game suspension for his "triple chop" celebration, couldn't have come at a better time

The appeal process for suspensions isn't supposed to take a full month, but the Brewers are certainly thankful this one lasted so long. Since Uribe was suspended by MLB and appealed the punishment, the Brewers' right-hander has made 10 appearances out of Milwaukee's 'pen and posted a 1.80 ERA. Though the closers role has been handed back to 2025 All-Star Trevor Megill, Uribe has ironically turned in his best stretch of outings of the 2026 season in the time between him appealing his suspension and MLB upholding their ruling.

It's not as if Uribe's one-game absence will stall his momentum either. The Brewers' high-leverage weapon has pitched four times in the last five days leading up to tonight's series finale with the Reds. In all likelihood, Uribe was going to be unavailable out of Pat Murphy's bullpen tonight even if he wasn't suspended. With an off day tomorrow before the Brewers open a three-game set against the Chicago Cubs at American Family Field, Uribe will now have back-to-back rest days, making the timing of his one-game suspension even better.

Though Murphy certainly wasn't a fan of Uribe's celebration, and Milwaukee's flame-throwing right-hander won't be doing the "triple chop" again anytime soon, the consequences handed down from MLB didn't end up being too severe. In fact, it's almost certain that Uribe's schedule wasn't altered in the slightest as a result of his suspension.
