Brewers' Sal Frelick has hilarious response to watching MLB Playoffs post-elimination
While the 2024 Milwaukee Brewers' season didn't extend quite as far as fans (and players) were hoping, several of their young stars took leaps forward while facing adversity head-on.
Both outfielder Sal Frelick and Gold Glove-nominated second baseman Brice Turang paired tenacious defense with pesky offense, and when October arrived, the moment wasn't too big for either player; Frelick hit .364 in the Wild Card Series with a clutch blast, while Turang notched a remarkable .455.
"Everything I did, preparation-wise, was the same as during the season," Turang noted in conversation with FanSided. "You try to keep the same mindset. Win every inning, win every pitch."
Frelick, though, did not not have the luxury of seamlessly moving from September into October, as if baseball's timeline were a simple, uninterrupted entity. A chaotic collision during the season's last regular-season series nearly knocked him out for the MLB playoffs and, as Frelick detailed, things were pretty touch-and-go for a while there.
Sal Frelick, Brice Turang stay locked in to MLB Playoffs after Brewers' elimination
"I was trying to stay optimistic," Frelick recalled. "Had no clue what it was. Thought it was like a bone bruise, or maybe a hip pointer. I've gotten plenty of those in high school football and hockey ... but I couldn't get up."
"The next two days, I was on crutches and wasn't really able to walk. I was kind of freaking out a little bit, like, 'I don't know if I'm gonna be able to do this'," he emphasized. "And then I showed up the day before the playoffs, and we had a little workout, and I was like, 'Agh, I gotta try just running around out there'. So I went out and I was kind of just jogging around, feeling a little better, loosening up, and I dumped the crutches. Said I was at least good to make the roster. The next day, showed up, felt a little better ... and was at least able to play the best I could."
Frelick and Turang's yeoman's work wasn't quite enough to advance past another postseason heartbreaker, but their on-field contributions and Frelick's emotional lift certainly helped push the Mets to the precipice.
Now, as the MLB playoffs continue without them, Frelick has still managed to keep tabs on his rivals, though he's clearly still dealing with the loss.
"I'm back and forth, from a football game to a baseball game here and there," Frelick noted. "But [during Monday Night Football] when Daniel Jones has the ball, I watch the baseball game," he added with a smirk.
Sal Frelick and Brice Turang spoke with Reviewing the Brew courtesy of their partnership with Brewers jersey patch sponsor Northwestern Mutual and their "My Time to Plan" series, preaching financial literacy. As two first-round picks, better money planning was obviously crucial to both Frelick and Turang's big-league whirlwinds.
