In regard to scheduling, it's been an odd start to the 2026 season for the Milwaukee Brewers. As has become standard in Major League Baseball, an off-day was awarded to the team on the second day of the season, which is supposed to serve as a "make-up" day in case of rain on Opening Day -- a useless safeguard for a team like the Brewers who play under a retractable roof.

Then, after completing series against the Chicago White Sox and Tampa Bay Rays, the Brewers encountered a rare two-day break ahead of their series opener with the Kansas City Royals. The break wasn't intentional, but rather the result of their Friday night contest in Kansas City being postponed due to inclement weather. The Brewers and Royals completed their series with a doubleheader on Saturday and a Sunday matinee, before Milwaukee headed to Fenway Park for a three-game set with the Boston Red Sox.

Following their series in Boston, the Brewers enjoyed an off-day yesterday prior to opening a home series against the Washington Nationals tonight. The abundance of off-days within the first two weeks of the regular season affords Milwaukee the ability to get creative with their starting rotation. The team was forced to call upon left-handed rookie Shane Drohan in Wednesday's series finale in Boston after the doubleheader in Kansas City shuffled things around, but now the Brewers have the luxury of a fully rested starting staff heading into the weekend.

With another off-day on Monday, Milwaukee can line up their starters exactly how they want this weekend. As a result, the Brewers have elected to bump both Kyle Harrison and Brandon Woodruff up a day, which effectively removes right-hander Brandon Sproat from the weekend probables.

As Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel notes in the post above, the Brewers have not yet announced why exactly they've elected to make this change -- more information will arise this afternoon when Pat Murphy addresses the media. However, with Sproat struggling out of the gates and the Brewers having the ability to start both Harrison and Woodruff on extended rest, the decision makes plenty of sense.

The 25-year-old Sproat, who the Brewers acquired from the New York Mets in the Freddy Peralta blockbuster this winter, has shown flashes of excellence through his first two outings in a Brewers uniform. It's clear he possesses a deep arsenal of pitches that will play at the big-league level at some point. However, a lack of command -- both missing the zone and leaving too many pitches over the heart of the plate when he does find the strike zone -- has led Sproat to surrender 11 earned runs in his first 6.2 innings with Milwaukee. Included in those two starts are four home runs and seven walks.

The Brewers could simply be skipping Sproat's spot in the rotation this time around, a luxury they have due to their plethora of off-days during the first month of the season. Or, they may slide him into a long relief role for the near future to have him regain his confidence before rejoining the starting rotation in the coming weeks. It's a strategy the Brewers have used in the past with arms like Corbin Burnes and Freddy Peralta, both of whom went on to become All-Stars.

Not too much should be read into the Brewers' decision to bump Sproat from his expected weekend start against the Nationals until more information about the situation surfaces. However, it's nevertheless important that Milwaukee is being very intentional with their pitching decisions, even this early in the regular season.
