Far too much of the offseason for the Milwaukee Brewers and their fans has centered around what they are likely to lose. Yes, Willy Adames is about to reject the qualifying offer and become a free agent where he is already a hot commodity. Yes, the possibility exists that Devin Williams gets traded this offseason if the Brewers get a decent offer. However, fans want to know who the team is actually going to add to try and maintain their NL Central dominance.
It is probably fair to guess that the Brewers aren't going to take a huge swing this offseason as helpful as that would be. They are going to have to continue to rely on smart, low cost moves and giving young guys opportunities. That philosophy is what makes move that Milwaukee made on Monday a peak Brewers move.
According to ESPN's Jeff Passan, the Brewers signed Deivi Garcia to a minor league deal. While Milwaukee fans may not know his name immediately, his prospect pedigree makes him a surprisingly interesting addition.
Brewers sign former Yankees prospect Deivi Garcia to a minor league deal
There was a time when Garcia was considered to be a part of the Yankees future. He won the Yankees' minor league pitcher of the year award in 2019 and his swing and miss stuff had prospect evaluators very excited. However, a serious of setbacks with New York saw Garcia converted to being a reliever and ultimately being put on waivers where he was claimed by the White Sox also known as where careers go to die.
Garcia's numbers in 2024 were objectively bad as he posted a 6.18 ERA in Triple-A and an equally dreadful 7.07 ERA in 14 appearances in the big leagues. While there are a number of factors in play with his struggles, the biggest one is his command as walking north of 4 batters every nine innings pitched just isn't going to work as a starter or as a reliever.
However, Garcia's raw talent is very real and he still misses bats even at his worst. The Brewers, who are extremely well-known as an organization that knows how to maximize and fix pitchers, getting a guy that talented on a no-risk, low-cost deal could pay huge dividends. If it doesn't work out, Milwaukee doesn't lose much. If it DOES work out and Garcia begins to approach his lofty ceiling, this could be a move that might be the biggest bargain anywhere this offseason.
