For the second consecutive year, FanSided, the parent company of Reviewing the Brew, will present Major League Baseball's Silver Slugger Award winners. Last year, no Milwaukee Brewers ended up taking home a silver bat, but second baseman Brice Turang, catcher William Contreras, and designated hitter Christian Yelich were all named finalists.
Of that trio, Turang certainly has the best shot at redemption this year. Turang's competition last year included Nico Hoerner of the Chicago Cubs and Ketel Marte of the Arizona Diamondbacks -- Marte ultimately won the award for the second consecutive season despite many believing that Turang was more deserving.
This year, Turang is on pace to surpass the career highs he set last season in several offensive categories, including doubles, home runs, and RBI. Hopefully, his continued production earns him the recognition he deserves, and if it does, the Brewers' star second baseman would make franchise history in the process.
Brice Turang is aiming to be the first Brewers second baseman to win a Silver Slugger Award
Since the Silver Slugger Awards were first introduced in 1980, the Brewers have had several second basemen be named finalists for the honor, including Jim Gantner, Rickie Weeks, Scooter Gennett, Keston Hiura, and Turang himself. However, each of those five players ultimately came up short in their quest for a silver bat. That could certainly change this year.
With 59 games remaining in the regular season, Turang has already matched his career high with 28 doubles. He is also just one home run away from tying last year’s career-best total of 18 and three RBI shy of matching his personal best of 81.
Among National League second basemen, Turang ranks second in OPS behind Luis Arraez of the San Francisco Giants and Philadelphia Phillies, second in OBP behind Xavier Edwards of the Miami Marlins, and second in RBI behind Brandon Lowe of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Pair that with the fact that he's tied for first in doubles, fourth in homers, and has walked more than any other National League second baseman, and Turang's case for the Silver Slugger Award looks even better.
If Turang can finish strong, he could finally put an end to the Brewers’ long wait for a Silver Slugger at second base. Hopefully, his three-run home run against the New York Mets on Wednesday night, kicks off a hot streak following Turang's recent slump at the plate. Turang's offensive improvement throughout his MLB career has been incredible to watch, and it's time he's rewarded for it with a Silver Slugger Award.
