Brice Turang shares piece of history with two Brewers MVPs after historic streak

The Milwaukee Brewers are somehow staying afloat without three key offensive contributors. As the team anxiously awaits the returns of Jackson Chourio, Andrew Vaughn, and Christian Yelich, the Brewers have quietly won five of their last six games and each of their last two series.

A string of strong outings from their starting pitching has absolutely played a role in the Brewers' recent stretch of success, which directly succeeded a six-game losing streak. However, on the offensive side of the ball, much of the credit for keeping the Brewers above .500 while their offense is seriously hamstrung is 2025 breakout star Brice Turang.

Expectations were understandably high for Turang entering the 2026 season. The 26-year-old second baseman paired the excellent bat-to-ball skills that he displayed in 2024 with an onset of power during the second half of the 2026 season, showcasing an offensive profile that could turn Turang from an everyday big-leaguer to an impact All-Star. It was something of a second-consecutive breakout for Turang, who enjoyed a vast improvement from his rookie season during his sophomore campaign in 2024. Now in his fourth year, the Brewers' Platinum-Glove-winning second baseman is matching the hype in every way possible.

Turang, who earned more attention on the international stage while competing for Team USA in the World Baseball Classic this spring, has come out of the gates hot in the regular season. He's slashing .307/.430/.560 with 10 extra-base hits through his first 20 games of the season, good for a .990 OPS that ranks fourth among qualified hitters in the National League.

However, what's even more impressive than Turang's early-season numbers is the fact that the young star has reached base in every single game he's played this year. According to the Brewers' Sr. Director of Media Relations, Mike Vassallo, Turang's 20-game on-base streak to start the season is the third-longest in franchise history, trailing only former MVPs Ryan Braun and Robin Yount.

Anytime a Brewer's name is on the same list as Ryan Braun and Robin Yount, you know they've accomplished something special, and that's just what Turang has done through the first 20 games of the regular season. Turang's place aside Braun, who won the NL MVP the year he started with a 23-game on-base streak, and Yount, who was coming off an AL MVP Award when he started the 1983 season with a 23-game on-base streak, is well-earned, and it opens up a conversation about just how high the Brewers' second baseman's ceiling truly is.

Turang's name has rightfully been thrown around in All-Star conversations in each of the last two years, though he's ultimately been snubbed from the Midseason Classic thus far. However, in 2026, with the way his season has begun, limiting the conversation to just the All-Star Game feels like an injustice to Turang. Through the first three and a half weeks of the season, Turang has been among the best players in the league.

Entering play on Tuesday night, Turang was tied for fourth in the National League in FanGraphs' Wins Above Replacement with 1.2 and ranked second in the NL in Weighted Runs Created+ (wRC+) with a 180 mark that indicates he's been 80% better than league average through this point in the season.

It's still early, and Turang keeping this pace up for the rest of the season would represent an even larger "quantum leap" than the ones he's experienced in each of the last two years. However, Turang's power is no fluke, as his Team USA teammates constantly commented on, and paired with his great bat-to-ball skills, elite defense, and top-tier baserunning ability, there's absolutely reason to believe that Turang can be among the most valuable players in the sport.
