CC Sabathia's son off to head-turning start in Brewers' organization

The Milwaukee Brewers pleased their fanbase when they selected Carsten Sabathia III, the oldest son of franchise legend CC Sabathia, in the final round of the 2026 MLB Draft. After signing his contract with the Brewers and since making his professional debut for the Low-A Wilson Warbirds, Carsten and his father have joined the short, but growing list of father-son duos that have both played in the Brewers' organization, which includes Prince and Jadyn Fielder as well as Mike and Daz Cameron.

Reminded of the legendary run that his father produced during the second half of the 2008 season, Brewers fans immediately loved the team's selection of Carsten in the 20th round of this year's MLB Draft. However, it wasn't simply fan service or a pick rooted in nostalgia; the 22-year-old Carsten, who played his college ball at Georgia Tech and Houston, has some real promise, and his potential has been on clear display during his first two weeks in the minor leagues.

Carsten Sabathia is already displaying the power that the Brewers hoped he would tap into

Sabathia is not a starting pitcher like his father, but instead is a 6'4" right-handed hitting first baseman. However, despite his frame, Sabathia wasn't a prolific slugger during his college career. In 83 total games in college, most of which came during his junior and senior seasons at Houston, Sabathia collected just nine homers and posted a pedestrian .439 slugging percentage.

However, the hope, when the Brewers drafted him, was that Sabathia could tap into power that simply had yet to be unlocked. In his first 11 games with the Low-A Wilson Warbirds, that power potential has certainly shown up. Since making his professional debut on August 11, Sabathia has already crushed three homers and three doubles, and boasts an eye-popping slash line of .405/.468/.690, good for a 1.158 OPS.

It's certainly a small sample size; Sabathia has just 47 total plate appearances with the Warbirds thus far, but his early production should have the Brewers and their fanbase intrigued. Sabathia has also shown decent plate discipline during his first two weeks of pro ball with seven strikeouts to five walks, and is 1-for-1 on stolen base attempts.

Since Sabathia's debut, the Warbirds have gone 9-5 as they try to chase down the red-hot Fayetteville Woodpeckers, the Houston Astros' Single-A affiliate, for the second half title in the Carolina League's North Division. The Warbirds remain 5.0 games back of the Woodpeckers, but with recent draft picks Trey Ebel (first round) and Kyle Jones (third round) joining Sabathia on the roster, Wilson's talented squad could make things interesting down the stretch.
