Confusing Giannis Antetokounmpo tweet puts Brewers at center of trade rumors

He's not joining the Brewers... we think.

Over the weekend, while the Milwaukee Brewers gave the NL East-leading Atlanta Braves all they could handle, Ben Brust of ESPN Milwaukee dropped one heck of an interesting quote about another Milwaukee superstar, Giannis Antetokounmpo: "Giannis Antetokounmpo reportedly doesn’t want to leave Milwaukee — he wants to leave the Bucks."

Now, before anyone starts to drool over the idea of getting the 6'11" Greek Freak in the Brewers' pitching lab, it should be noted that Antetokounmpo is going to remain an NBA player. He's the hottest name on the trade market right now and the key to the Bucks' impending rebuild.

[Although, his extension off the mound would be unreal, not to mention how absurd it would be to pair him with Jacob Misiorowski. Maybe a career change would be in the best interest of the two-time NBA MVP...]

On the opposite end of the spectrum, the Brewers are in a clear win-now period and could emerge as one of the most prolific buyers in baseball prior to the trade deadline. All in all, this should be a summer to remember for Milwaukee sports fans.

For anyone holding out hope that Giannis will remain a Buck, it may be time to reset expectations. Though his stay on the trade block has lasted longer than anyone could have anticipated, NBA Insider Shams Charania has made it clear that the 2021 Finals MVP will be dealt before the 2026 NBA Draft (which begins on June 23).

Nevertheless, while one Milwaukee franchise rebuilds, another is set to push its chips into the center of the table. The Brewers have never been go-for-broke buyers under David Stearns or Matt Arnold, but with a commanding lead in the NL Central, this could be their best chance to dethrone the Los Angeles Dodgers for National League supremacy.

Tarik Skubal remains the name on the trade block, and for good reason. The two-time Cy Young Award winner will soon be due for a record-setting extension and is arguably the best pitcher in baseball. In other words, he's the Giannis of Major League Baseball, which is fitting given how frequently he's been attached to Milwaukee in trade rumors.

Don't expect Arnold to dismantle the young core the Brewers have so carefully and meticulously built over the last decade, but it's fair to hope that he'll make an atypical big swing prior to the trade deadline, be it for Skubal or another superstar. As the Bucks can tell you, these win-now windows don't stay open forever -- it's ideal to take advantage of stars' primes and put the best possible team around them.
