Cubs' broadcaster just made a bold claim about Brewers rivalry (and he's right)

It's difficult to argue against right now.

Ask a Chicago Cubs fan who their biggest rival is, and you're likely to get the answer "the St. Louis Cardinals," and for a good reason. The Cubs and Cardinals' rivalry is more than 130 years old, the two team's met in the postseason back in 2015, and there's a history that no other team will truly ever be able to match.

In that same vein, ask any Milwaukee Brewers' fan who their biggest rival is, and you're likely to get the same answer: "the St. Louis Cardinals." Not only did the Brewers lose to the Cardinals in their lone trip to the World Series back in 1982, when the two teams were in different leagues, but since becoming division rivals, the Brewers were denied of another trip to the Fall Classic back in 2011, when St. Louis defeated them in the National League Championship Series.

For as heated as the Brewers and Cubs rivalry has become over the last decade, it's near impossible for the two to ever be considered each other's biggest rival, due simply to the history that each franchise has with the dreaded Cardinals.

That said, there's certainly a conversation to be had when the stipulation of "current rivalry" is included. If the question is "what is the biggest rivalry in the sport right now?" there's an argument to be made that the Brewers and Cubs' current feud tops the list. Cubs' broadcaster Boog Sciambi made that exact argument on 104.3 The Score this morning, as heard in the clip below.

Chicago's broadcaster, Boog Sciambi, is justified in saying the Brewers and Cubs' rivalry is the biggest in baseball right now

"Right now" is not a clearly defined timeframe, but for the purposes of Sciambi's argument, let's focus on the last three years. Since the start of the 2023 season, no two teams, other than the Brewers and Cubs, have finished in first and second (including ties) in their division in each of the last three years. The Brewers have three division titles during that time, and the Cubs have been the NL Central runner-up in each of those seasons.

Including their two wins this year, the Brewers are 23-18 in the regular season against the Cubs since the start of the 2023 season, a record that indicates it's been a heated battle between the two NL Central powerhouses.

Pair the three consecutive division races with the fact that the Cubs hired Craig Counsell away from the Brewers ahead of the 2024 season, and the rivalry becomes even more intense. However, the crowning jewel of the Brewers and Cubs' recent rivalry, and what cemented it in the conversation of "best current rivalry in baseball," was the electric postseason series the two teams played last year. After winning the first two games of the series in emphatic fashion, the Brewers dropped two frustrating games at Wrigley Field before returning home for a decisive Game 5. By a score of 3-1, the Brewers defeated the Cubs and secured their first postseason win since the 2018 season.

"Biggest rivalry" is a subjective description, and different fanbases will undoubtedly have different opinions about which rivalries are more intense than others. However, Sciambi and anyone else who claims that the Brewers and Cubs currently have the biggest rivalry in baseball are justified in their beliefs, and the way the 2026 season is going, the conflict is only going to intensify.
