Don't look now, but Garrett Mitchell looks primed to break out for Brewers in 2025

Garrett Mitchell has already proven himself at the big-league level, but he still does not get the credit that he deserves. After nearly 200 major league at bats last season, Mitchell is looking to build on 2024 and become the Milwaukee Brewers' best outfielder in 2025.

So far, things are looking good. Mitchell is coming off of a 3 RBI performance in spring training against the A's in a game that the Brewers won 10-0. His numbers in Arizona are quite impressive, to say the least.

With a .353 batting average in his 17 at-bats, Mitchell has doubled in three of his six hits. Another one of those hits was a home run, meaning four of his six hits have been for extra bases. In 2024, 23 of his 50 big league hits were for extra bases.

Garrett Mitchell's strong spring could foreshadow big things for Brewers' outfielder in 2025

There's no doubt that Garrett Mitchell has the power, but his strikeout rate leaves a lot to be desired. He struck out 36% of the time last season, which did not come with a small sample size. His 2022 and 2023 seasons saw him barely surpass 60 at bats, but he struck out 46% in '22 and 40% in '23.

Sadly, his high strikeout numbers have continued in spring training. Seven of his 17 at-bats have resulted in a strikeout, continuing the trend of power or bust. One thing that the Brewers will certainly be missing with the loss of Willy Adames is the long ball, but they also need hitters who are consistently able to get on base.

When Mitchell gets on base, he's not afraid to run. The 26-year-old stole 11 bases last season, more than he did in 2022 and 2023 combined. Having recorded 50 hits in 2024, he ended up touching home an impressive 33 times.

While his strikeout numbers may be high, he was able to record 33 runs scored due to his ability to get on base. Mitchell drew 25 walks in 2024, a number that doubles his total from 2022 and 2023 combined. So far in spring training, he's walked on three occasions.

After hitting .311 in 2022, Brewers fans knew Mitchell had what it took to make it at the big league level. Again, that average came in just 28 games played. His average took a hit in 2023, dropping to .246 in nine less games played. Consistency is key, and Mitchell's .255 average last season was a great thing to see as he was routinely in the Brewers lineup.

There was no bigger moment than Game Two against the Mets in the playoffs. Mitchell's home run forced game three, which ultimately didn't go the Brewers way. Without Mitchell's eighth inning bomb, Milwaukee would have been swept. If there was anything positive to take out of the postseason, it was knowing that Mitchell has what it takes to show up when the team needs him the most.
