Just a few years ago, the Milwaukee Brewers were well represented in the 2023 World Baseball Classic (WBC). Milwaukee's rostered players at the time who participated in the WBC included Devin Williams, Abraham Toro, Luis Urías, Rowdy Tellez, Willy Adames, Joel Payamps, Sal Frelick, Carlos Rodriguez, Alex Claudio, Javy Guerra, Matt Hardy, Robert Stock, and Alex Hall.

Among those who participated, Urías (aka Wicho) enjoyed an outstanding run with Team Mexico, helping lead the club to the semifinal round. He delivered several clutch moments for his country, most notably driving in the go-ahead run during a thrilling come-from-behind win over Team Puerto Rico to secure a semifinal berth. Urías followed that up by launching a three-run home run off Roki Sasaki against Team Japan in the semifinals.

Urías, who was the Brewers' Opening Day third baseman in 2023, sustained an early-season injury prevented him from logging much playing time before he was traded to the Boston Red Sox at the midseason trade deadline. However, Urías found his way back to Milwaukee in 2025, signing a minor league contract with the organization during the final month of the season.

When the 2025 campaign concluded, Urías became a free agent, and he remains one to this day. However, his lack of success in the free agent market this winter is not stopping him from once again representing Team Mexico in the spring. Both Luis and his brother Ramón, who is also a free agent, have committed to playing in the 2026 WBC.

Ramón and Luis Urías will compete for Team Mexico in the 2026 World Baseball Classic

After insurance issues prevented Ramón from participating in the 2023 WBC, the Urías brothers are now slated to be teammates for Team Mexico in the 2026 tournament. Together, they will have the opportunity to live out a long-held dream, not only representing their country on the world stage but doing so side-by-side as teammates.

Ultimately, this opportunity for the Urías brothers is super meaningful as it is the culmination of years of perseverance, pride, and shared ambition, offering them a rare chance to represent Mexico together on baseball’s biggest global stage. For both players, the opportunity blends national pride with family, making the experience as meaningful off the field as it is impactful on it. A Brewers fanbase who, for the most part, has fond memories of Wicho, should be rooting for the best for him and his brother in the WBC this spring.
