Not that long ago, the Milwaukee Brewers and New York Mets, who linked up for one of the biggest blockbusters of the 2025-26 offseason on Wednesday night, squared off in the 2024 NL Wild Card Series. The three-game series went the distance, and, as no Brewers fan needs to be reminded, New York ultimately advanced thanks to a late-game go-ahead three-run homer from Pete Alonso off a Devin Williams airbender.
Though the fireworks at the end of the game, which included back-to-back solo shots from Jake Bauers and Sal Frelick in the bottom of the 7th inning, are what sticks out in fans' minds, many might not remember how the game started quite as well. It began as a pitcher's duel with Brewers' rookie Tobias Myers tossing five scoreless innings, and the wily veteran José Quintana, who eventually joined the Brewers for the 2025 campaign, tossing six scoreless frames for the Mets.
Following Myers' excellent outing, which will go down as one of his best in a Brewers uniform, Pat Murphy turned to Trevor Megill, Nick Mears, and, shockingly, his ace Freddy Peralta, to bridge the gap between his starter and Williams, his All-Star closer.
Given Myers' impressive start, the notoriety of Murphy turning to Peralta in the eighth inning, and Williams' blown save in the ninth, those three pitchers emerged as the most notable from what is one of the worst losses in Brewers' history. But that's not the only thing they share in common; now, they are all members of the New York Mets, as initially pointed out by Michael Marino on the social media platform X.
2024 Wild Card Game 3, Mets vs Brewers. The game where Pete miraculously homered off of Devin Williams in the 9th. 3 players who pitched for the Brewers? Tobias Myers, Freddy Peralta, and Devin Williams. All 3 are now New York Mets, and Pete Alonso is no longer on the team.

Once key pieces of the Brewers' devastating 2024 NL Wild Card loss to the Mets, Freddy Peralta, Tobias Myers, and Devin Williams now find themselves on New York's revamped roster
After Williams' devastating blown save in Game 3 of the 2024 NL Wild Card Series, the Brewers traded him to the New York Yankees in exchange for Caleb Durbin and Nestor Cortes in December of 2024. When he became a free agent at the end of the 2025 season, Williams elected to stay in New York, but join change squads, agreeing to a three-year, $51 million deal with the Mets.
Then, on Wednesday night, the Brewers sent Peralta and Myers to join Williams in Queens, trading them to the Mets in exchange for top prospects Jett Williams and Brandon Sproat. The two will reunite with their former closer after just one season apart. Ironically, as Marino points out, Alonso is no longer with the Mets, as he signed a five-year, $155 million deal with the Baltimore Orioles earlier this offseason.
It’s remarkable to consider that all four of these players, each of whom played a significant role in that meaningful playoff game just one season ago, are now no longer part of the organizations they represented at the time. For both clubs, their roster has since been reshaped by trades, free-agent departures, and shifting priorities, underscoring how quickly the landscape of baseball can change.
